The Catholic Schools are being told “thou shalt not” teach your children that abortion is wrong. In Canada, our well documented, solid Judeo-Christian heritage has regrettably been undefended behind the pulpits of our nation for decades. We are certainly paying the price today. Now, someone may ask, “Is it the church’s responsibility to defend them?” It is not the church’s mandate but, as His followers, it is our mandate to defend His Lordship over this nation and it is the church’s mandate to equip us for this task. Last Wednesday, the Ontario Minister of Education, Laurel Broten, said during a press conference that Ontario’s “anti-bullying” legislation, Bill 13, also means that Catholic schools should not be teaching that abortion is wrong, because it takes away from a woman’s right to choose and that is one of the harshest acts of bullying against girls. Wow! Who would have thought someone was going to dream that up in the translation of Bill 13? Last year, Bill 13 became very controversial when the government introduced a clause that would force schools to allow clubs named “gay-straight alliance.” Now that the bill has become law, the Church is finding out with more clarity just where all this is headed. Yes, the Archbishop of Toronto was quick to fire back, and I will add that every God-fearing Canadian who makes up the universal Church should also be firing back. The pulpits of every denomination should be informing their Church of these misgivings and exposing from the pulpit the trash some top leaders are legislating. In my Communiqué “Christianity is Feared” only weeks ago, I reported on how history has proven that diehards will attempt to silence Christians. Last February,I pointed out how government was sending a booming message across Canada: namely, that the authority to educate children resides with the state, not with the parents, and certainly not with any church. The evidence is indisputable! Now, again, I remind our readers of the warning spoken to me a few years ago by a Ukrainian immigrant Alex Kovalenko: “Jim, I lived behind the Iron Curtain. I saw secularization take over our homeland; the people were asleep. Our rights to speak out were lost. Our right to choose how our children were educated and who educated them was lost.” Then, in speaking about the latter stages of the totalitarian takeover of his country, he said, “In the end, government officials came to the churches and told the priests and pastors that they could preach anything they wanted but the children were not allowed to attend church until they turned twenty years old.” He went on to say, “Jim, Canada is asleep! I see the same sequence of events that happened in the Ukraine happening right here in Canada! Let Canadians know, wherever you travel, to wake up!” The stealthy advance of secularism is now paying off and, as a result, secularists are making their demands with much more openness and boldness. Yes, the clergy have a responsibility to lead the way and congregations have the responsibility to get behind them. Revenue Canada does not allow for Churches to endorse a particular candidate or a specific political party but let it be known that everything else is permissible. Yes, the Church speaking out on all of the important political issues is allowable, it is absolutely necessary and regrettably totally missing. So you tell me why? Why have churches chosen to be so quiet? Where is their courage? You ask, what can be done? Here are two excellent examples in the USA of the Roman Catholic Church actively involved in leading a charge against anti-Christian legislation. We certainly need our Canadian versions of both these examples coming from all denominations. First, here is a Roman Catholic election ad, and secondly this priest exhibits the energy, concern, and leadership that needs to be spoken out of the pulpits in churches across Canada. Ladies and gentlemen, the spiritual problems in Canada can’t be solved with a political solution. Apart from Canada returning to God, the root of the problems will remain untouched and will continue to manifest in Canada in different forms. The Church has a major responsibility and must decide very soon to unite and fight. At the church’s disposal there is one political vehicle in Canada that was built specifically to help us fight as a united force against those who would dare to discard the Christian principles of our Canadian heritage.
