Celebrating Righteousness in Canada, Slovenia and the USA!

Last Thursday, May 14, it was my pleasure and honour to be with thousands of other pro-life Canadians at the annual National March for Life in Ottawa. It was a tremendous event; the day before it had been pouring rain and—like many participants—I was praying for better weather for the March and Rally. God answered our prayers; we had a beautiful day with a great turnout and a lot of encouragement from the folks in attendance. I had an opportunity to say a few words; here’s a link to the message I gave.
As always, there were many young people who had come to celebrate human life and to protect it…“from conception until natural death.” Some came with their parents; some came with busloads of friends and schoolmates. Some came on their own initiative, to declare publicly, in our nation’s capital, the importance and the sanctity of human life.
One of the speakers—and there were many—was Aleš Primc, the head of a Slovenian organization called Voice for the Children and the Family. He and Alex Schadenberg, Executive Director of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition in Canada, shared an amazing story of victory against the forces of darkness, ie. the death culture, in Slovenia. In a referendum held recently, Slovenian citizens voted to reject a euthanasia bill passed by the Slovenian government earlier this year. Against all odds, Slovenians voted 53% to 47% against the killing of people by poisoning (lethal injection).
Alex S. and Aleš P. spoke at both the ceremony on Parliament Hill and at the Rose Dinner that night. They expressed much gratitude to God, acknowledging that without Him, no such victory would have been possible. They also recognized the importance of working diligently to educate the public about these important issues.
Mr. Primc emphasized one very important aspect of the education campaign in Slovenia. He said that he refused to use the language of the proponents of killing. In the literature he and his organization put out and in their communications to the public, he did not use the euphemistic language of the death culture. He referred to the taking of innocent human life by lethal injection as poisoning—which it truly is.
This report of this dynamic victory for the pro-life movement was a tremendous encouragement for all those attending the March for Life in Ottawa. Many of us have been on the front lines for decades in this battle for the culture. We’ve spoken up often for the sanctity of life and against the killing of the innocent. We’ve spoken and written frequently about the sanctity of marriage and God’s design for human sexuality. We’ve marched and protested and written letters to Members of Parliament and Senators about the need to defend religious freedom, freedom of speech and freedom of conscience. Over the years in which we have been engaged in these battles, we have had very few decisive victories. So it was a breath of fresh air and wind in our sails to hear about this moral victory in public opinion and public policy in Slovenia. It gives us hope, that in God’s time we could see similar victories in Canada. One potential area of victory could be the passing of C-218, MP Tamara Jansen’s bill to reverse the decision made by the previous Liberal Government that would allow death by injection for citizens suffering solely from mental illness. That terrible policy, allowing execution for the mentally ill, is slated to come into effect in 2027 unless Bill C-218 is passed. Please pray for this bill to pass.
I’m writing this article today from Washington, DC. Immediately following the March for Life on May 14th, I travelled to Washington for an event called Rededication 250 which was held today, on May 17th, 2026. This year marks the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence on the 4th of July. But on May 17, 1776, early American founders and patriots dedicated themselves to prayer and fasting as they prepared for the signing of the Declaration and the eventual outbreak of what became the American Revolution. This year, US political and spiritual leaders thought it important to hold an official ceremony in recognition of America’s biblical foundations and to ask God once again to exercise his dominion in bringing the USA back to its historical underpinnings.
Like Canada, the USA has, in many ways, departed from its original understanding and acknowledgement of the Creator’s central role. Secular thinking, human reasoning, pragmatism and fallen human nature have led to horrific policies and practices that dishonour God and ignore his commandments. As in Canada, the USA has allowed abortion on demand, sexual confusion and perversion in public schools and—in many cases—judges and politicians have failed to protect and defend basic human freedoms. But today, government officials and spiritual leaders offered passionate prayer and—with very specific references to Jesus Christ—called for protection, guidance and blessing from Almighty God.
We need a similar move in Canada. The Word of God says, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” We long to see that reality manifested in Canada in a new and powerful dimension, one that we have not seen for many years.
It behooves us—we who call ourselves Christians—to set our hearts and our minds on the victory that is possible when God is honoured and his people are obedient. The Word of God says that, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when the wicked rule, the people mourn.” Let us commit ourselves to the work to which God has called us and to the prayer of faith for our nation, that we might once again have righteous men and women serving in positions of authority so that the people of Canada will again be able to rejoice.
