Perseverance vs. Insanity
May 10, 2011 | Author: Jim Hnatiuk |
Shortly after the results of the 2011 Election were known, I received an email from a gentleman who wanted to alert me to the supposed coming demise of the Christian Heritage Party.
In short, he referred to the quote sometimes attributed to Einstein: "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." (The man writing to me used the word "stupidity" but I suppose the concept is much the same.) He indicated that we in the CHP were in that category because we keep running in elections in spite of repeated losses and setbacks. His advice to win the pro-life cause was for us to change our name, our membership requirements, set aside our opposition to same-sex marriage (for now), and drop all religious requirements.
My general response to advice like this is as follows:
Yes, I agree: “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” Canadian voters in general, and many Christians in this country, continue to vote for a party (the Conservatives) led by a man who has promised to resist any and all pro-life legislation brought forward. Mr. Harper has promised in each of the past four elections to refuse to defend the unborn and so far he has kept his word, shelving Ken Epp's Unborn Victims of Crime Bill in 2008 and resisting and voting against Roxanne's Law last December. He promised the Canadian voters recently in an interview that, even with a majority, any pro-life legislation would be defeated as long as he is Prime Minister. Still, many Christians extol him as a paragon of virtue and have now worked hard to give him that majority.
There is another quote Christians should consider, this one from Mark Twain: "If Christians should vote their duty to God at the polls, they would carry every election, and do it with ease." Yet Canadian Christians, by and large, have not exercised their privilege or their duty.
The Christian Heritage Party is providing an opportunity to build public support for a pro-life, pro-family government. However, the majority of Christian voters have not shown their commitment to these goals by supporting CHP candidates. The disappointing polling numbers further reduce the CHP's credibility with the public and allow the media to discount us as a "fringe" party. Thus, Mr. Harper's refusal to protect the unborn seems justified to the pragmatists and the challenge of building public support for moral policy alternatives is dealt yet another blow.
So, where does the "insanity" rest?
While there remains one heart beating in this country that has not accepted the politics of compromise, the CHP will not fade into extinction. Comments and advice intended to discourage us from our efforts to protect the unborn, restore traditional marriage, defend personal freedom, and eliminate Canada's growing debt are only a reminder to us that we have a lot of work to do. With over 100,000 babies dying each year, the prospect of four more years of a government deaf to their cries is a sad reminder of the cost to a society when "leaders" choose power over principle.
Will Canadian Christians continue to choose a man and a party leader who has promised to fight against moral reform for the protection of innocent human life? That would be insanity.
I conclude this Communiqué reminding those who criticize CHP Canada from the comfort of their pews that there were 46 Christians in this last election willing to stand in the public square and unashamedly and courageously offer Canadians a pro-life and pro-family alternative. Over the next four years, social and fiscal conservatives will finally get to see what a Harper majority will give them, and if he keeps his word to allow the killing of the unborn to continue unabated, they will have no excuse to continue to withhold their support from the CHP, the only pro-life federal party in Canada. (Of course, there's always hope for the Hoperites — maybe he was lying!)
I pray these comments and reflections might open the eyes, minds, and hearts of every God-fearing Canadian, and translate into growing support for CHP Canada. Last week a new CHP supporter told me that our party is Canada’s best kept secret! I'm asking every reader who loves this nation and who loves righteousness to help us get this secret out to all Canadians, and especially to all Christians. I encourage you to take the time now to forward this Communiqué to them.
