New Hope!—CHPites

The Dec. 14th edition of The Hill Times reports that, at a forum held in Ottawa, Gerry Nicholls of the Democracy Institute stated that the conservative movement in Canada has branched off into three factions since Prime Minister Stephen Harper came to power, namely the "Harperites, The Hoperites, and The Helplessites." I agree, but with one big exception; missing in the analogy are the CHPites.

Gerry Nicholls explained that the "Harperites" are those conservatives who are only concerned about hanging onto power at the cost of any kind of conservative agenda. I don't think he'll find an argument there.

The "Hoperites," he says, include those conservatives who are "disappointed and disillusioned" by Mr. Harper but still have hope that the party can win a majority and move back to being true conservatives.

I continue to be amazed that such a 'hope' can still exist at this late stage of the game. Surely the number of 'Hoperites" is rapidly diminishing. This faction would have to be fairly naive to believe that a (majority) Harper Government would abandon the liberal agenda that gave them their "majority" to favour conservative values that they purposefully left behind. If Mr. & Mrs. Hoperite actually exist then… folks lets be blunt…the Harper Caucus would see a more conservative agenda as political suicide … The CPC won`t let it happen!

The article goes on to explain that Hoperites also fear that a Liberal government would be even worse. Really, how so? At least they'd have the right colour on their logo.

As Mr. Nicholls put it, many 'Helplessites' are leaving the fight, which is a tragedy. The "Helplessites" don't think Mr. Harper will ever implement a truly conservative agenda, even if he goes on to win a majority government. He was their last great hope, and he has let them down. Yes, he let them down, but he`s not the last great hope because all of this is, naturally, giving birth to an increasing number of CHPites.

Yes, more and more social and fiscal conservatives are finding out about the uncompromisingly conservative agenda of CHP Canada, now the sixth largest federal political party in the nation. Former Helplessites are trickling in to join the CHPites and, with Mr. Harper's crew vigorously digging the ditch on our behalf, that flow will undoubtedly increase to a flood.

Canada now has two Liberal parties now fighting for dominion and it's not much of a fight. The new Harper liberal party has made it near impossible for the old Liberal Party to regain even a foot hold. Switching leaders from Dion, to Ignatieff, to Rae or even young Trudeau will still have them looking 'stunned'. What the old Liberal Party needs is not a new leader—they need a liberal platform—but Mr. Harper has it and he doesn't plan on giving it back.

Political Conservatism in Canada is limited to one federal party and that is CHP Canada. One day soon the mainstream media will not be able to purposely avoid us and then all true conservatives will find us. We are prepared and will continue to strive to be one UNITED conservative political voice.

I'm sure many of you reading this Communiqué know someone who is a "Helplessite." Why not forward this short commentary to them and help them realize that there is still hope for the future of Canada, and politically speaking, it rests with the CHP.
