God’s Law or Total Statism

"You can't legislate morality," is a sentiment commonly expressed in our pluralistic society. "I'm not bound by your rules; I have my own way of looking at things," is the accepted belief.

When each person determines right and wrong based on his or her personal beliefs and feelings, the "law" becomes a book of suggestions, interpretation becomes a high-stakes chess game, and enforcement becomes impossible. With no common ground of understanding we find ourselves blown about by the latest social fad, and the standards of society merely echo the mindset of the current batch of judges.

How can we create a cohesive country unless all people are equal under the law and the law is the same for all people?

Who defines morality? Who determines what is criminal? The courts? The government of the day? Or a Higher Law?

Last week's Communiqué pointed out how taxpayers are paying to house and harden our criminals prior to putting them back on the street to once again endanger our community. Criminals, perceived as victims, have the opportunity to receive a lighter sentence than the laws prescribe, even though the true victims-particularly murder victims-will never have the same chance to start over again. The Christian Heritage Party says, "That's criminal."

Taxes in Canada have become a nightmare; you don't own your own property or paycheque. Your right to own property is not even in our Constitution. Before you ever see a penny from your paycheque, the government has taken its portion to waste on things like contributing to a mosque in Toronto, or supporting obscene films, or supporting abortions at home and abroad. CHP Canada says, "That's criminal."

Today, Canada is the only civilized nation in the world with absolutely no abortion law. In other words, a mother who is nine months pregnant can make an appointment to have her child killed and discarded. Our government has abdicated its responsibility to enforce the moral law, "You shall not murder." Rather, Canadians have accepted a law which divides us into categories of equality. You may kill the preborn but not those who have been born…well…that is, unless you happen to be a father with a handicapped child like Robert Latimer. He received a slap on the wrist because he was not likely to reoffend-he only wanted his daughter dead-nobody else. The Christian Heritage Party says, "That's criminal."

Our nation is over $530 billion in debt and our government, to buy votes, has promised to increase our debt over the next four years-a debt our children and grandchildren will have to bear. Successive governments have stolen their future to finance unsustainable expectations. CHP Canada says, "That's criminal."

Surely we must have one set of laws for all Canadians, and those laws must be based on a common understanding of moral principles-principles which do not change with the latest social fads. Why can we agree that it's wrong to steal but we can't agree that it's wrong to take innocent human life through abortion?

The distinction is absurd. Morality is not a religious add-on. Shared moral values are the basis of eternal laws (written in our hearts) and civil and criminal laws (written in parliaments and legislatures). By definition, when a government passes a law, it must be legislating morality. It must equally apply penalties to all its citizens for violating the laws of the land. To have lasting validity and authority, those laws must be in harmony with the eternal and universal laws of God.

Either it is wrong to steal or it is not. And if it is, it ought to be binding in all circumstances-that's equality before the law. All people equally treated under the law and the same law for all people.

Either it's wrong to murder or it's not. And if it is, it ought to be binding in all circumstances. All people equally treated under the law and the same law for all people. Hence the preamble to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms states, "Whereas Canada is founded upon principles that recognize the supremacy of God and the rule of law."

A government that fails to support the eternal law of God becomes an accomplice to the common criminal.
