What are the causes of the coming 'demographic winter'?

One is simply gross inattention. There's no better example than the UN Fund for Population, UNFPA.

As we reported almost a decade ago in the CHP Communiqué, UNFPA's statisticians have been tracking demographics for a long time; they predicted a decade ago that the world's population will peak at about 9 billion around 2030; then it will go into a decline steeper and longer than the population "boom" of the last half of the 20th century.

Yet even while they were pumping out those statistics, UNFPA was funding abortion and other "population control" measures around the world!

Paul Ehrlich, the modern Malthus, warned in his 1968 book, The Population Bomb, "The battle to feed all of humanity is over. In the 1970s and 1980s hundreds of millions of people will starve to death in spite of any crash programs embarked upon now. At this late date nothing can prevent a substantial increase in the world death rate… a minimum of ten million people, most of them children, will starve to death during each year of the 1970s. But this is a mere handful compared to the numbers that will be starving before the end of the century." (emphasis in the original).

Ehrlich, like Malthus, was wrong. In fact, while the number of people in the world almost quadrupled in the 20th century, the price of food (in terms of hours worked to buy staples) actually declined 70%.

In the late '50s, Prime Minister Nehru lamented that India had "a very poor famine", and that many more would die the next year because the population cull was less than expected; half a century later, India-with twice the population of Nehru's day-had become a net exporter of food.

So much for Ehrich's "overpopulation" crisis!

Yet many economists and educators still talk as though the world has "too many people." Earth-worshipers and ecological preservationists use the same out-dated data. So do climate hysteria promoters.
