Women, Fragile or Strong?

I didn’t even see this one coming. Currently before Parliament for its second reading is Bill C624.

It seems some MPs think that Canadian women are so fragile that we can’t handle the generic term “sons” in our national anthem. “Oh, poor me,” we lament, “They used a term that does not pander to my fragile sense of being a woman.”… BAH!!!!

Yes, changes to our national anthem are before Parliament. Mauril Bélanger, the presenter of Bill C624, justifies it with, “[The two words] would ensure that more than 18 million Canadian women are included in our national anthem.”

To be honest, I never felt excluded because the national anthem said, “in all thy sons command.” Maybe I’m a bit odd. But the fact that this same issue was addressed in 2010 and Canadians spoke loudly and clearly on the subject indicates that I’m not alone.

I’m a confident and secure woman and am not wounded by every little real or imagined slight. Like most Canadians, I’m more concerned about the breakdown of the family. I’m concerned about governments forcing sexualization on our children. I’m concerned about Judges at the Supreme Court of Canada exalting the “oldest profession” in order to allow women to be subjugated by unscrupulous men. These things concern me!

I’m more concerned about watching my every word to avoid persecution by the “thought police.” To be honest, I wonder why our MPs are not dealing with a citizenry that cowers in fear over speaking in public. “What if someone doesn’t like me or what I said? What if I inadvertently offend someone? What if someone seeks to be offended by what I say? ”

I wonder why our government is wasting time over what is not an issue, two generic words in our national anthem, rather than dealing with out-of-control judges who have decided to remake Canada according to their vision… not the vision of our founders… not the vision of our citizens who elect a Parliament to govern, but the exalted vision of an elite oligarchy that tears down all that made our country prosperous and envied.

An oligarchy that has violated our open heritage of every citizen looking fairly, as equals, into the face of each other, for an archaic heritage that has women subject to their feudal lords, at the mercy of honour killings. Women forced to hide their beauty in case a man should be overcome by passion at the sight of her and passion forces him to assault her. This concerns me way more than the use of a traditional word that does not subjugate women.

Women have “manned” the home front, while our men fought in two world wars. These women served as mother and father to their children, as do many women today. They dealt with husbands killed in action, arriving home as invalids and with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Women have stood strong in uncountable ways and yet, we have people like MP Bélanger who try to make out that we’re fragile lilies that need to have our fragile egos pandered to in the most meaningless ways.

Women, such as Roxanne Fernandes, deal with pressure from conscienceless men to kill their children. When they don’t submit, then they are often assaulted to “make” them comply. But Parliament wasn’t interested in protecting women from coercion or murder; they have important stuff to protect women from…. “all thy sons command.” Now that is important stuff!

Parliament wasn’t interested in protecting women from sex-selective abortions. Absolutely not! Only the important stuff… “all thy sons command.”

It’s time to stop asking the “big three” political parties to start really governing this country. They’ve got less important stuff with which to concern themselves. There are too many important issues that get sidelined in favour of fluff and window dressing. Let’s put government back where it belongs…. In the hands of people who are seeking to govern Canada and set her back on track.
