Who Controls the Weather?

Rod TaylorWe love the changing seasons and the varied combinations of sun, rain, cloud, and wind that follow one another as we turn the leaves of our calendars. “Extreme weather events” can bring horrific damage and personal tragedy but we find comfort and security in the reliable annual cycles, in the seasons of growth, harvest, and rest. The sheer beauty of a bright-sun, blue-sky day brings joy to our hearts and Vitamin D to our bodies. The sun’s warm rays also grow our food, warm our bones, give us the oxygen we need (through photosynthesis), grow the wood to build our homes, and keep us from freezing on a cold, dark planet.

“Hot enough for you?” is a common question we’ve all heard on sultry summer days. When the mercury drops, we’re all glad to know that “spring is just around the corner.”

While we often complain about the weather (and other things) we know that every sunny day and every drop of rain on thirsty ground is the provision of God and we are encouraged by His post-flood promise to Noah: “As long as the earth endures, summer and winter, seedtime and harvest will not cease.” That’s a promise we can count on. After all, the One who made the planets, the sun, and the stars is able to keep the earth and its inhabitants in His tender care as we spin and rotate at 23½ degrees around this blazing furnace of gases we call the sun, 93 million miles away. God put us at just the right distance from the sun to maintain life. Any closer, we would burn up. Any farther away, we would freeze. The Almighty, in His wisdom, has created a perfect environment for plants and animals and for mankind, the crown of His creation, made in His image and for His purposes.

That’s why we must retain our confidence in God as the One who controls our weather. The CBC recently unveiled the anxious plans of David Keith, professor of applied physics and of public policy at Harvard University, who is both a researcher and a proponent of “climate geoengineering.” Mr. Keith (and those who share his vision) wants to “protect the earth from global warming and climate change” by dispersing particles of metals, chemicals and plastics into the atmosphere to reduce the amount of sunshine reaching the earth. This plan has some obvious disadvantages:

  1. Geoengineers are not God. Many intricate plans of ingenious men have gone awry. The words “unintended consequences” and “collateral damage” come to mind. Think of Fukushima, of rabbit infestations and the extinct passenger pigeon to name a few. Tampering with the climate of planet earth on a massive scale is nearly guaranteed to make things worse, not better. No human mind could have designed this universe, the cycle of the seasons and the interactions of all the plant and animal species, which share our delicate environment. No human mind is capable of understanding the intricacies and complexities of rain and cloud and climate.
  2. We, and all God’s creatures, rely on the sun. Reducing our worldwide daily allotment (designed for us by the Creator) reduces plant growth and health. Reflecting sunlight back into space for the dubious objective or reducing “global warming” (or its currently more convenient cousin “climate change”) simply robs us of the sun’s life-sustaining energy. Some have called this a concept of “global dimming” and some believe that experiments are already underway, without the informed consent of the family of man.
  3. Professor Keith admits that geoengineering is a “brutally ugly technical fix.” He cheerfully admits he has a lot of qualms about it as a technology that could have dangerous and unintended consequences. Yet he promotes the idea because of his belief in the theory that carbon dioxide and other  “greenhouse gases” being released by human activity (specifically the use of fossil fuels) are causing dramatic and catastrophic “climate change” which must be reined in by drastic human countermeasures.
  4.   Thousands of tonnes of minute particles of sulphur, plastics, aluminum, and other unknown substances being released into the skies above will eventually find their way back to earth and their potential impacts on human, animal and plant health are unknown and unknowable. This is not an experiment involving a few laboratory rats. This is an experiment that would put unspecified particulates into the atmosphere affecting all people living on the planet. It would deprive all of us of needed sunlight and warmth. And implementing the plan would produce its own carbon dioxide emissions. Massive amounts of jet fuel would be required to spray the skies.

We don’t want man playing God. Not in the termination of innocent human life. Not in redefining marriage. Not in creating oppressive state-run childcare institutions. Not in the delusional dictates of false religions and corporate power structures. And certainly not in seeking to control the weather. There is only One who has the wisdom and understanding to manage the weather, the climate, and the seasons of the earth. The same One who formed it and us. See Job 38: 34-38 (The Message):

Can you get the attention of the clouds, and commission a shower of rain? Can you take charge of the lightning bolts and have them report to you for orders?....Does anyone know enough to number all the clouds or tip over the rain barrels of heaven?…

We urge our readers and all CHP members to pay attention to these phrases when you see them in the news: “geoengineering,” “weather modification,” “stratospheric aerosol geoengineering.” Also keep an eye on the skies. While the government categorically denies that geoengineering is taking place today, much evidence indicates that experiments are being conducted without your permission or knowledge. To educate yourself, visit www.geoengineeringwatch.org. CHP Canada has not yet developed a policy or position on this question but we invite you to become aware of the discussion so that you can respond intelligently when this topic appears in the news. As Canadians, we must participate in these discussions before our government becomes a willing participant in worldwide schemes to control the weather.
