Bully Politics and the Censorship of Dissent

Nothing new here. We shouldn’t be surprised. But we should be alarmed and outraged. With no hint of shame, PM Mark Carney and his Liberal gang are announcing their intentions to run roughshod over public opinion now that they have a clear majority in the House.
We already saw this play out in the passing of Bill C-9 at 3rd Reading in the House on March 25. While we and many others still hold out some faint hope that the Senate—the ‘Chamber of Sober Second Thought’—might either reject or amend that wicked piece of legislation, the grim reality is that 100 Senators were appointed by the Trudeau Liberals during Justin’s tenure. Also, 6 out of 9 Supreme Court Justices. The deck is stacked in favour of the Liberals and with no evidence yet that these appointees are any more likely to show a backbone than the members of the Liberal caucus in the House.
MP Marc Miller, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture has indicated in public statements that the Carney government is about to press its advantage—now that it has a clear majority—and pass controversial legislation designed to severely limit what can be said online and to whom. While not spelling out in detail what steps the government was willing to take, he spoke of “online harms”, “protecting children” and “preventing attacks” on certain “segments of society.”
This is the same Marc Miller who, as Chair of the House Justice Committee last October famously said that certain Bible texts are “hateful.” It’s very interesting that he now claims to represent Canadian Identity and Culture; rather than working to preserve an identity and a culture based on our Christian heritage and biblical understanding, he now promotes a culture and identity that is foreign to most Canadians and would have been incomprehensible to our founders.
The minority Liberal Government under Justin Trudeau attempted to pass legislation regulating online content but was hindered by its minority status. Now that PM Mark Carney has a majority (however ill-gotten and ill-deserved), there is little to prevent him from pushing sweeping censorship provisions onto the daily lives of Canadians.
Bill C-8 would give the police power to order telecommunications service providers to disclose private information and to restrict or cancel client subscriptions or access (without notification or reason given). Bill C-22, introduced in March of this year, reinforces the concept of police access to online personal data by lowering the evidentiary threshold for police access to accounts. Under C-22, they would merely have to say they have “reasonable grounds to suspect”, not “reasonable grounds to believe.”
It’s true and it’s annoying that all these bills, including Bill C-9, the so-called “Combatting Hate Act”, tend to overlap and run together. It’s hard to keep them straight and even harder to mobilize against them. The Liberals have no such problem; they simply table them and every single Liberal MP votes to support.
And who knows what other complicated and camouflaged bills this government may yet table? Their goal is to stifle and censor debate and dissent, to use the threat of jail time and financial penalties to silence their critics and to use compliant media to numb and brainwash the masses into a willing acceptance of their agenda. Through an education system and an immigration system designed to create—in Canada—the New World Order to which they aspire, public opinion can be coaxed, massaged and shaped to align with the twisted logic and goals of the Ottawa elite.
There is historical precedent. Nazi tyranny followed a wave of popular support of high-sounding ideals. Communist Russia was made possible by the propagandizing of skilled social engineers who promised bread, land and self-rule to the landless peasants who were later betrayed by their presumed deliverers. Rough figures indicate that around 100 million human beings died at the hand of various communist governments in the 20th Century.
Freedom of speech is essential for the protection of innocent human life and the defence of every other freedom. We must resist—peaceably and lawfully—with every fibre of our being. Once censorship and tyranny are established, there is no easy way and no guaranteed way that freedom can be regained. The regime will use the slightest pretence and the most ridiculous falsehood to retain its power and control.
The Christian Heritage Party of Canada represents the ideals that once made Canada the “True North Strong and Free.” We invite all Canadians who value Life, Family and Freedom to join us as members and help us continue to promote the principles recognized in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms: the “supremacy of God and the rule of law.”
