The Canadian News-scape Just Got Darker…
February 17, 2015 | Author: Peter Vogel | Volume 22 Issue 7
Last Friday dawned bright and sunny in Ontario, but just before that, Sun shut down. Sun News, Canada’s controversial free-thinking national news channel went off the air early in the morning.
They were Canada’s only socially conservative major national TV network. They gave coverage to events such as the annual Life Chain, which other news sources had conveniently ignored for many years. Like all news channels—whether they admit it or not—Sun News was biased; the views expressed on Sun News provided a much needed counterbalance to all of the other networks in this country, including the CBC, whose radical reporting on social issues has been a prime mover of public opinion for decades. To people like us, who view the world with an eye to history and the moral responsibility we all share, Sun News was a welcome ally in the battle to overcome lies with truth.
Sun’s Byline anchorman, Brian Lilley, showed his willingness to explore political alternatives by granting an interview to CHP Leader, Rod Taylor—and a friendly one at that! Even by asking the question whether the CHP was a one-issue pro-life party, he emphasized the value he placed on that issue!
But the pro-life issue was not the only one that Sun News championed: Ezra Levant used his program, The Source, to champion free speech, environmental honesty, and freedom of religion. He did everything he could to raise the issue of Trinity Western’s law school battle. He didn’t just talk about it; he also raised money for the legal battle. When you think about it, you can’t really come up with any well-known journalist who has done anything like it in Canada.
Sun News did not have an easy run. The CRTC quashed their efforts to achieve a broader viewer base. Sun News—rightly so—sought recognition and acceptance with other national news channels as a valid and legitimate source of news. They asked the CRTC to have them bundled with the other national news channels in basic cable packages, which would have made their important and unique contributions to journalism available to many more Canadians. When the CRTC rejected their appeal, countless viewers were denied access to the truths and opinions that Sun News had to offer. The limiting of viewer access and market share negatively impacted advertising revenues and that made it hard to pay the bills. So now they are gone.
The Sun News style was sometimes confrontational and often dramatic; they will be sorely missed. The national debate on so many important issues regarding the sanctity of life, personal freedom, sexual morality, and public safety are in desperate need of journalistic support. The bullies of the left now have free sway, with no anchor and no restraint. It’s like a tug-of-war with nobody pulling on the other end of the rope.
Your CHP National Board had been planning this Spring to begin advertising for CHP on Sun News because their rates were reasonable and many of their viewers were receptive to our ideas. For now, this opportunity is gone. We will continue to produce the 15-second commercials so desperately needed to reach Canadian voters, but we will have to use other channels for distribution. While both CBC and CTV have a broader viewership, ad pricing will be higher. We hope to have our ads ready for distribution by the end of March. They will also be available for our EDAs and candidates to sponsor on local TV stations across the country. We will keep you informed as they roll out. Please consider how you can help us get our message out!
The business of informing the public on important issues, which the major media (and political parties) want to ignore, must continue—we at CHP will continue to do all we can.
We will talk about unborn victims of violence: victims like Molly, whose mother Cassandra Kaake was killed before she was born. The murderer was charged with one count of murder. He killed two humans, but the unborn one doesn’t count under Canadian Law. Our work must go on, but it just got harder. Canadian journalism has gotten darker without the presence of Sun. Hundreds of thousands of unborn humans have become victims, not at the hands of unknown murders, but at the hands of “doctors.” Social pressure to abort and get rid of the inconvenience of pregnancy has killed more unborn humans than victims like Molly and her mother, as tragic as this double murder is. Don’t let the darkness hide this. Demand better from our journalists. Demand better from our law makers by supporting CHP.
Support CHP today as we continue to stand strong against the strong tide of liberalism and shed light on issues that others are trying to obscure.
