The Dark Side of Euthanasia

When you’re trying to sell a product, you usually ensure the benefits are visible for the first while so people will anticipate and celebrate their purchase of your product, motivating others to make the purchase also…then reality sets in as manufacturing defects begin to become evident.
Euthanasia has been legal in Canada for only months and yet, its ugly side is already visible…the manufacturer’s defects are already apparent.
Tragically, Canadians are already being forced to fight for their lives as the value of human life diminishes before our medical profession’s dual role…to heal and to kill.
In the space of two days, two heartbreaking stories from B.C. hit the news.
Life News reports that an elderly woman, with a probable urinary infection, was euthanized while the family sought to initiate discussions with the facility that planned to carry out the killing. November 7th, they were notified that their aunt had requested to be euthanized. When the hospice doctor was advised by the victim’s nieces of the probable infection, he said they would check into that possibility before euthanizing her. The nieces were then called to see the euthanizing forms signed and witnessed by the doctor and two staff members; they reminded the doctor of the probable infection. That was now immaterial; the form was signed. The aunt died on Nov 9th…less than three days after the discussion was first introduced.
The information that we have is very lean; were there other factors present such as the aunt suffering from “a grievous and irremediable medical condition?” Or, had she made “a request for medical assistance in dying” without “outside pressure or influence?” Or, had her natural death “become reasonably foreseeable,” (other than the reasonably foreseeable imminence of death due to old age)?
What we do know is: 1) that the procedure was rushed against the wishes of her family, 2) there exists the possibility of her decision having been coerced, and, 3) bladder infections are not normally fatal. According to our federal government, “you must have waited a period of at least 10 days between signing your request and when the service is provided.”); the decision must not be “the result of outside pressure or influence;” and you must “be in an advanced state of decline that cannot be reversed.”
We also know that it freed up a space in the facility in which the elderly aunt lived. Was that a factor? We also know that a lot of money was saved that would have been spent in the medical care of this aunt. Was this also a factor?
Canadians were led to expect that assisted suicide would allow them to end their lives on their own terms with dignity; now the dark side is being revealed and our seniors are more vulnerable than ever.
But it does not stop at seniors:
An injunction has been filed to preserve the life of a 34-year old man. “According to court documents, Toor’s family has filed an injunction in B.C. Supreme Court ordering staff at the hospital to keep administering life-saving treatment.” There is no signed request for euthanasia; the family knows what Mr. Toor would choose. Toor’s father, a doctor, advises that the hospital is giving Mr. Toor a drug “known to depress the central nervous system and should not be used in comatose patients.” A second opinion was sought and supported the family’s desire to maintain treatment. But, it took proceeding with legal action to stop the proposed medical killing of this young man.
When I look at these two circumstances, it makes me feel very vulnerable. Personal wishes don’t matter, family wishes don’t matter, the safeguards don’t matter. It’s open season on the elderly, the infirm, and the handicapped.
What can we all do to give ourselves a fighting chance of surviving the medical professions new “power to kill?” Speak out on this important issue. Make sure everyone knows what you think about our Canadian doctors’ new power to heal or kill.
There is only one political party that is willing to stand for the right to life, CHP Canada. We affirm that man is made in the image of God and thus has inherent value. We deny that anyone, other than God, has the right to take innocent life. This is our heritage…the heritage successive governments have fought to erase.
It’s time for Canadians to confront “the Dark Side.” It’s time to make a stand for what we know in our hearts is right. It’s time to build CHP Canada nation-wide, including your electoral district, and ensure that our 2019 election includes a candidate that sees each of us as a valuable image-bearer of God.
Join the fight! Join CHP Canada and help to preserve our historic Christian heritage.
