On taking God at His word

Green Party leader Elizabeth May, a declared Anglican, has adopted the political stance of Anglican-turned-Catholic politician Tony Blair regarding the faith: "We don't do God here."

That's troubling, for I think most Bible-believing Christians agree that if our faith doesn't govern everything we do, we ought to (as the Apostle Paul wrote): "Examine yourselves to see if your faith is genuine. Test yourselves. Surely you know that Jesus Christ is among you; if not, you have failed the test of genuine faith."

I don't write this to criticize or condemn our sister; we are commanded not to condemn one another. "Who are you to judge another's servant?" Paul asked. "To his [or her] own master he [or she] stands or falls." But I want to use the occasion to warn other Christians-including myself and all members of the CHP-of a danger lurking in the political arena, as it does in the world of business: a not-so-subtle trap that says, "Oh, I keep my faith in the 'religion' compartment, and my business (or my politics) in another, separate compartment."

It really cannot be so.

I cannot count the number of politicians who claim to be Christians, but say their faith doesn't influence them on issues like abortion, euthanasia, homosexuality, prostitution, gambling, etc., etc.

They're fooling themselves.

When we become members of the faith-members of Christ, in fact-He becomes our head; and the head directs the whole body. It would be schizophrenic for the head to be going in one direction and the body in another! "What!" Paul exclaimed, "Is Christ divided?"

The creeping influence of mankind's so-called "wisdom"-which God calls foolishness-is one reason the church is splintered. If we want God's blessing on our nation, we're going to have to start taking Him at His word.

The Green Party is to be commended for taking seriously the "cultural mandate", which says we ought to take care of God's creation; to preserve the environment for our children-a policy the CHP has held longer than the Greens have. But we should also preserve our children for the environment. That's why we believe in adoption, not abortion.
