Now What?

The landslide Liberal victory leading to majority control of Canada’s federal government has led to jubilant celebration by many Canadians but not all Canadians. For those with a Christian world view it has served as a wake-up call; whether we like it or not, the election results reflect the current culture of mainstream society. There is no moral majority. There will be varied reactions from Christian world view people ranging from ‘c’est la vie’ acceptance to mild disappointment to rage. What should our response be?

Every person is to be in subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. Romans 13:1

It is easy to have ill feelings toward our newly-elected government and to engage in disrespectful dialogue and name-calling, similar to how Liberals reacted when the Conservatives won their majority. We are not, however, Liberals; their ways are not our ways. We are Christians, followers of Christ, and servants of God. Thus our response and attitude must be scripture-inspired.

Despite our efforts and prayers in this election God has established the Liberal government for this season and we are to be subject to them. Does this mean we have to abandon our God-given moral convictions and cast off God’s authority? For sure not.

Remember this: Daniel was a very high ranking official of King Darius so we must believe that he treated the King with honour. However, when faced with the choice of praying to the King of Babylon or the God of Israel, he disobeyed the King and continued to kneel before God three times daily by an open window as he always had. Without shame or fear he honoured God above the King. With sadness King Darius had Daniel tossed into the den of starving lions. When King Darius returned in the morning to see if Daniel had survived, Daniel called out to him, “O King live forever,” a respectful reply, honouring the king.

Then the even more amazing event is found In Daniel 6:25-26:

Then Darius the king wrote to all the peoples, nations and men of every language who were living in all the land: “May your peace abound! I make a decree that in all of the dominion of my kingdom men are to fear and tremble before the God of Daniel; for He is the living God and enduring forever, and His kingdom is one which will not be destroyed, and His dominion will be forever.

God used the ungodly to bring glory to Himself. What if Daniel had been badmouthing the King or had compromised his Godly convictions to save his own skin? Would the results have been the same?

At the November National Board Meeting we affirmed Article A3 of the CHP Canada Constitution as being the objectives of CHP and in the priority as listed:

(a) To provide true Christian leadership and to defend, promote and uphold Biblical principles in federal legislation.

(b) To gain seats in Parliament so that we can have a direct influence on policy and policy changes.

(c) To contend for, and attain the leadership of the federal government of Canada through the existing democratic process

Daniel’s goal was to honour God in everything he did which included honouring those in authority; his goal was not to hold a high political position. However, because of his godly attitude and obedience, from his lowly position as a prisoner of war, God caused the godless to bestow great honour on Daniel.

Perhaps the most effective path to seeing Canada return to her Christian heritage is to obey God in every way including honouring those whom God has placed over us while never compromising God’s ways. Speak and write respectfully about those over us even when we are disagreeing and above all, pray that God will change their hearts and minds to see things His way.

Let us all work to provide true Christian leadership by first of all being unashamedly Christian and acting in a manner that brings glory to God. Is there a better way? Is there a better political party for Christians to support?
