Justin Trudeau’s principled stand…
August 26, 2014 | Author: Peter Vogel | Volume 21 Issue 35
On June 14, 2014, Justin Trudeau did the Christian Heritage Party a big favour. At the same time, he did Canada's future a great disservice. He promised that the Liberal Party would be pro-choice in the future, and he essentially gave the membership and MP s the choice of being pro-abortion, or leaving. Quite the choice! So much for the “big red tent”!
More recently, on August 25, 2014, Trudeau was asked by Sun News his position on abortion-on-demand while he was in New Brunswick. New Brunswick has the strictest abortion access laws of any province, and in a recent Angus Reid survey, only 34% of New Brunswickers support unrestricted access to abortion. But will the leader of the Liberal Party be swayed by polls and statistics? Not on matters of principle like this one! He talked about the right to abortion that women had fought hard to gain! Hmmm, right, yes, uh, well! Is he referring to the ‘bill of goods’ that women were sold that their babies were something other than human? Is he referring to the years women spend suffering from Post Abortion Syndrome, about which they were not warned or counselled?
In Canada, women do not exactly have the right to abortion (Sun News rightly pointed out that no such right exists in Canada) but the Supreme Court did strike down Canada's laws on abortion. The court told Parliament to make up a new one, but they’ve never gotten around to it, and the Liberals would make sure they never would. In practice, the Conservatives won't either, despite some good efforts by a few pro-life MPs. Our current Prime Minister has made it very clear that the death of 100,000 pre-born children will not be dealt with by his government. Aborted babies are ‘collateral damage’ in his bid to retain power.
Soon after Justin Trudeau made his initial stand on abortion, he also talked about how men should not be allowed to make this choice for women, especially with regard to any future law-changes. We should really ask if he, as a man, is qualified to speak for men in this connection? Is Mr. Trudeau qualified to speak for women in this connection?
What other questions must only be determined by people of a particular gender? Are there other criteria we should use in determining who is allowed to address an issue? Generally, rape is committed by men; does this mean that they should decide on the legality of this crime? Should terrorists make the decision on whether terrorism is a crime or not? Should the crack addict decide if selling crack should be a crime? This silliness must be exposed for what it is: shallow and trite grandstanding.
The scary thing is that Justin Trudeau, dubbed the “Shiny Pony” by Sun TV, can get away with making foolish statements and still float higher in the polls on the strength of his family name, his youth and his good looks. Thankfully, Sun News does not give him a free ride. They have been tenacious in their insistence on getting the facts out there on the issue of abortion and other foolish statements made by Mr. Trudeau.
This coverage by Sun TV is another gift for CHP, if we recognize its significance. They may not be mentioning us by name (yet), but every time they report on abortion, they are bringing up an issue that once barely registered on the radar screens of most national news sources, an issue which highlights the CHP’s unwavering moral stance on this issue, and one which no other party will touch.
Justin Trudeau has chased the pro-lifers out of the Liberal Party, Sun News is informing Canadians on the unacceptable status-quo of abortion-on-demand and the political cowardice that allows it to continue. We, as members and leaders in the CHP, no longer have excuses. Others have put the issue on public display for us. Those who take an honest look have to admit that the CHP is the only party with moral coherence on the protection of innocent human life. We have been given a golden opportunity to boldly ask pro-lifers—those who have not yet done so—to join the CHP, the only federal pro-life party. The time to grow this party is NOW!
