What’s Killing Canada? Mendacity, Treason and Apathy

Mendacity: a tendency toward untruthfulness. Habitual misrepresentation. The negative character trait that twists facts for personal advantage. When anyone elected to a high office abuses the powers of that office to enrich himself or herself—that’s mendacity. In fact, it’s idolatry: the apotheosis of wealth and power, instead of God. We see this today on many levels, most notably in the high political offices that ought to be dedicated to the wellbeing of all people in Canada.
Treason: the legal definition of treason is aiding or abetting a nation’s adversaries in time of war. It doesn’t have to be a shooting war. Aiding Canada’s enemies during a trade war is also harming the nation and its citizens—our fellow Canadians. Wilfully implementing policies that undermine a nation’s prosperity and the freedom and security of its citizens is a form of treason. Today, we see the forming of “unholy alliances” with Chinese dictator Xi Jinping and the globalist rulers of the European Union. Economics alone should be enough to motivate better policies; moral values demand a different approach. Pressing on, despite these flashing red lights, indicates either an intention to harm Canada or complete ignorance of global realities.
Apathy: the opposite of love is not hate; it’s indifference. Far too many churches have adopted the Secularist understanding of the doctrine of “separation of church and state.” That doctrine is intended to protect the church from government intrusion; not to exclude God’s people from the public square! If God’s people abandon the public square, who will be left there? Only God’s enemies.
When a Cabinet Minister (Marc Miller) recently expressed his opinion that certain Bible passages should be deemed “hate speech,” he was in serious error. God, the Bible and the church don’t rebuke sin out of hate, but from love: it’s God’s love for people that moves Him to correct the sinner, in order to preserve him from an eternity in hell! God’s Word—often delivered through us—is offered with the intention of helping a precious soul to find forgiveness, eternal life beyond the grave and joyful purpose here on earth.
In the case of nations, God’s Word provides wisdom for momentous decisions and warns against foolish actions that lead to economic and moral collapse.
What is the antidote for Mendacity, Treason and Apathy?
Truthfulness is the medicine for Mendacity. Truth is stronger than lies. Our nation is in grave trouble, but we cannot overcome our problems by pretending they don’t exist or by whitewashing our sins and failures. When Britain faced the terrors of the Nazi scourge, the great statesman and newly-appointed Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, did not sugar-coat the situation. He acknowledged it. Addressing the British people, he said, “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat.”
Individuals deserve to be told that the path to eternal life is narrow and requires the death of the old self and a complete reliance on Christ. It is Truth that can set the captives free.
Faithfulness and Integrity are needed to conquer Treason. Treason is an undermining of one’s nation or even one’s personal relationships. Individuals must value their families, their friends, their employers, their churches and their nation. There must be a commitment to the greater good of those with whom they associate. Loyalty and patriotism have become rare. It is the responsibility of godly citizens to once again promote a sacrificial love toward and service of the country they call home. This is not “blind obedience” or uncritical approval. Citizens—and political leaders even more so—have a responsibility to expose and reprove flaws in policy or errors in implementation but the goal should be to improve and strengthen, not to tear down. Faith toward God and faithfulness in all areas of life is necessary for individuals and nations to achieve greatness.
Passionate Devotion to God is the cure for Apathy. Most Canadians—both Christians and those of other faiths or who claim no faith at all—desire peaceful, productive lives. We all want strong healthy relationships, happy families, crime-free neighbourhoods, enjoyable, fulfilling careers, an effective healthcare system, justice in our courts, etc. But many have not yet realized that those goals require commitment and sacrifice. People need to step forward and serve—on town councils, school boards, provincial legislatures and the federal Parliament. We need God-fearing lawyers, policemen, farmers and professors. Each human being should be striving for excellence in school, at work, at home and in the political sphere. Churches ought to be defining those high standards and equipping their congregants to achieve them. “Leaving the job to others” is the surest way to personal dissatisfaction and national decay.
The Christian Heritage Party is devoted to bringing biblical principles of morality and justice to our nation. We can only hope to achieve that impact when large numbers of our citizens—and especially our young people who are the future voters, politicians and judges—make a personal commitment to live by and enthusiastically promote those principles. Prayer changes things. We continue to pray for the hearts and minds of citizens and our elected politicians to be transformed and conformed to the will of Almighty God.
