Who Gains From “Cassie & Molly’s Law”?

It’s been 28 years since the Supreme Court of Canada took away a woman’s right to choose. Oh, somebody framed the argument well: “A woman has the right to choose what happens to her body.” What they haven’t said is that you only have the right if you choose to kill your baby.

If you choose to nurture your baby through the pregnancy; if you choose to lovingly prepare a nursery for your arriving baby; if you anticipate the arrival of this beautiful gift of God; then you may get to keep your baby if nobody else chooses otherwise. That’s not a right; that’s a privilege.

As a woman, I have been highly offended by our elected officials’ manipulation of women in creating a “right” that has only one option. They condescendingly tell me that I need to be able to choose to kill my baby, all the while I have no corresponding right to keep my baby.

Today, Canada has an opportunity to give women the right to choose life. MP Cathay Wagantall, has blown aside the lies and false arguments to offer women the right to keep their baby. When that right is denied, there will be consequences. There would be no more “free pass” on killing babies.

This has been a long, hard-fought and, too often, tragic battle. The latest victims are Cassie and Molly. Cassie looked forward to the birth of her baby. She lovingly prepared the nursery. She excitedly anticipated Molly’s arrival but…someone else said, “No!” He said that she could not have her baby and he killed both Cassie and Molly…two months before Molly’s birthday. A daddy lost his wife and baby! But, that also didn’t matter. After all, greater than the right for a woman to choose to keep her baby is anybody’s “right” to say a woman’s baby must die.

This is the hill on which our current prime minister has chosen to stand; “It is not for a room full of predominantly male legislators to take away those rights from women.” Take away what rights? It’s a choice with only one option. How can you choose between one thing? You can choose to kill your baby…but you can’t choose to allow your baby to live. Our PM will defend a woman’s right, and anybody else’s right, to kill her baby. But nobody has a right to protect a baby from harm.

I call on our legislators to support a woman’s right to choose! Make it a crime to rob a woman of her right to choose life for her baby.

Thank you, MP Cathay Wagantall, and those who assisted her to prepare legislation to protect a woman’s right to choose, not an ill-conceived pretend-right that limits a woman’s right to choose to a choice with only one option.

“Cassie & Molly’s Law” is summarized as: This enactment amends the Criminal Code to make it an offence to cause injury or death to a pre-born child while committing or attempting to commit an offence against a pregnant woman and to add pregnancy as an aggravating circumstance for the purpose of sentencing.

I asked the question, “Who Gains From ‘Cassie & Molly’s Law’?” We all gain. By protecting our youngest and most vulnerable citizens, we have protected our own humanity.

We Need A Law and ARPA (Association for Reformed Political Action) give us opportunity to send a prepared letter to our MP. Take advantage of this opportunity! You can also download a petition (PDF).

The Christian Heritage Party supports the right of all pre-born children to life. We support, as an interim measure, the right for a woman to choose life for her baby.
