Wars and Rumours of Wars

Can anyone doubt that this world is in crisis? Jesus declared, “in the last days, there will be wars and rumours of wars…Nation shall rise up against nation and kingdom against kingdom…” We certainly have that today. Although mankind’s history has been a patchwork of conflict, with territorial demands, ruthless invasions, bloody reprisals and merciless domination and subjugation of whole people-groups, it’s hard to imagine that there have ever been so many conflicts brewing in so many corners of the globe as we have today.
Of course, in the last century, we went through two world wars in which most of the major nations of the world were gathered into coalitions united against common foes. People will, after all, join hands with some very unlikely allies when they believe the alternative to be even worse. World War II saw Britain and the US entering into intimate codependency with Soviet Russia against the greater peril of Nazi Germany. Churchill and Roosevelt shared military secrets with Stalin in order to defeat Hitler’s war machine. In Churchill’s final volume about the war, Triumph and Tragedy, he details the emotional agony he experienced near the end of the war as he realized how Russia would take advantage of the circumstances and swallow East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, and more. Stalin’s brutal domination over those he conquered and his slaughter by bullets and starvation of 30 million of his own people are stark reminders of the collateral damages of war. Political and military alliances may be dictated by time and circumstance but allies do not always share the same end-goals or the same ideals.
Today, with travel and communication increased astronomically and with the shifting political framework of the United Nations, NATO, global corporations, and global financial structures, the world is very different from the world of the 1940s. In those days, battles raged across Northern Africa and the Middle East, which were orchestrated by great alliances and with little attention to the unarmed local populace. Today, every two-bit dictator has land mines, IEDs, tanks, and military aircraft. Today, it is not only the USA that has nuclear weapons but countries like Pakistan, North Korea, and—of course—Russia. Never before have so many nations had the capacity for destruction that we see today. Nuclear armaments, missile delivery systems, supersonic fighter planes, and long-range satellite-controlled drones capable of delivering fatal payloads are only part of the new and very uncomfortable reality we find ourselves in. In addition, we have cyberwarfare, employing vast armies of government hackers (in addition to the ever-present government hacks). We have the constant threat of biological and chemical warfare and some even claim a new field of weather warfare. And we have the unexpected and unnatural development of suicide bombers…like the 19 men with boxcutters who in 2001, killed over 3,000 people, shut down the US for days and forever changed the travel experience around the globe.
We also have new alliances between populist rebels, Islamic fundamentalists, and their secular humanist defenders in the West. While nations like Iran are pressing towards nuclear capabilities, boys from New York and Toronto are running around in the desert in black pyjamas, cutting off the heads of innocent Christians on worldwide media and threatening mayhem on a scale unimaginable in our times. They are not organized like Hitler’s armies. They are not sent as patriots from a single homeland. They are claiming the world for their misguided and sadistic ideology and they are not subject to normal motivations. Bloodthirsty and cruel, they have death as their banner and are “drunk with the blood of the saints.” It is hard for us in the West, who were raised with a Judaeo-Christian worldview and heritage, to understand people like this. There are no rules of war which they honour. Journalists are not protected behind their lines. Women and children are not exempt from cruel slaughter. Since they have been indoctrinated with false hopes of a martyr’s reward, even the threat of reprisals and the likelihood of being killed in action have little bearing on their behaviour. Guerrillas have always been a problem for armies but, in the past, most partisans and patriots have at least had some ties to the strategies and plans of a recognized nation. These morbid renegades feed on terror and answer only to their demonic voices of chaos and torture.
The backdrop of this troublesome movement is a world on the brink of collapse, financially and militarily. China is building a military machine and a navy using the West’s dollars. Russia keeps probing, as in Ukraine, to find whether the West still has backbone. Iran, feeling her way to nuclear power, lays out the conditions it wants and demands accommodation. And little Israel—which did not legally exist until after WWII—is surrounded by nations who want to see her destroyed. This jewel of democracy in a sea of tyranny maintains her place against all odds by the friendship of the West and the protection of God. We are glad that Canada has stood by this little nation and continues to extend to her the right hand of fellowship. Tyranny, cruelty, and anti-Semitism must not triumph in our day, at least not with our consent.
We pause to remember the tragic events of the past, such as the Armenian Genocide of 1915, the Jewish Holocaust of WWII, the massacres of Rwanda and Cambodia, and we say that we must not allow these things to happen again.
The above litany of yesterday’s tragedies and today’s challenges is not meant to invite despair. The world is intimidating. Resistance to righteousness is rising arrogantly on every hand. The God who created the heavens and the earth, the God who rules the raging of the seas, the God who knows the end from the beginning still has plans for us both as individuals and as a nation and He will direct our steps. No matter the obstacles, no matter the difficulties, no matter the complexities of international politics in the 21st century, our God will give us the wisdom and the courage to face our foes and to choose to do the right thing.
We must obey the call He places on our lives. We must stand up for the truth and for the innocent. The Christian Heritage Party will set an example so Canada can yet be a blessing in the earth. Truth is stronger than falsehood.
We appreciate your support for CHP Canada, the only federal political party recognizing “the supremacy of God and the rule of law.” If you’re not already a member, join us today and help us declare truth to this generation. If you are a member, what more can you do in obedience to our sovereign Lord?
