Life Is Still the Central Issue!

Rod TaylorWithout life, we have nothing. Without life we can do nothing. For every human being, the right to life is the first and most basic of all human rights.

Every culture and civilization has recognized the need to protect innocent human life. Murder, the deliberate taking of an innocent human life, is universally seen as abhorrent. Yet, in countries around the world—including Canada—innocent human lives are taken every day. In our beloved Canada, approximately 300 pre-born babies are killed every day, and this is not called murder but a matter of “choice.”

That this is a political issue, should surprise nobody. That this issue is avoided by most politicians, should surprise everybody. How can we be silent in the face of evil? How can we talk of human rights when the most basic of human rights is being violated every day?

In the recent federal election, a great many Canadians expressed their unhappiness with the Liberal-globalist-secular-socialist-tyrannical machinations of the past four years. Not enough, however, to turn Parliament blue. As became painfully obvious on election night, a large segment of the Canadian voting public was easily and dramatically swayed by fear and faux patriotism—against their better judgment—to reinforce and strengthen the dominant Liberal oligarchy that includes the PMO, the PM-appointed judiciary, the PM-appointed Senate and the taxpayer-subsidized Liberal media.

In this rising tide of socialist, secular, sensual and sensational sentiment, a few feel-good quips, a few dismissive platitudes seem to have been enough to garner the support of unthinking Canadians, the very ones who have suffered the arrogance and paid dearly for the profligate spending of our nearly-forgotten former Prime Minister for the past nine years. They became willing—even enthusiastic—about entrusting their future and the future of Canada to a man they barely know and whose record reeks of globalism, statism and blind adherence to unscientific climate ideology and failed economic theory.

In all of this, the Leader of the Opposition, Pierre Poilievre, chose NOT to distinguish himself as a principled defender of human life, showing barely any light between his position and that of Mark Carney’s on the critical matter of abortion. In fact, he went out of his way to try to prove to the Canadian voting public that he approves of and will maintain Canada’s current shameful status as a nation with NO laws regulating abortion throughout all nine months of pregnancy.

Whether his willingness to support the shedding of innocent blood drew to him any support from the “mushy middle” (those who basically prefer economic prosperity, but who care nothing for the sanctity of life) is hard to determine. One may ask but may never confidently identify the reasons why an individual (or a group of individuals) marked their ballots in a particular way. Obviously, this repeated assurance of support for abortion failed to win enough votes to win the House. And we know that it cost him some votes—how many we don’t know. There was a principled remnant who withheld their support from the Poilievre Conservatives; they could not—in good conscience—vote for a party whose leader is willing to see the bloodshed continue. Some voted for the CHP or the Peoples Party or the new United Party. Others may have stayed home and chosen to “waste their vote” by not voting rather than giving their support to a pro-abortion “conservative.”

What is equally apparent—and equally disturbing—is the number of pro-lifers, Christian and otherwise, who did vote for Mr. Poilievre and his candidates/representatives in spite of their obvious abandonment of the pro-life cause . . . in spite of their willingness to trade the lives of babies for votes and seats in Parliament. Their intentions we understand very well. They hoped—in spite of Mr. Poilievre’s promise to ensure that “. . . there will be no laws restricting abortion passed when I’m Prime Minister”—that by overwhelming the Liberals and ushering in a reign of “conservatism” under Poilievre, pro-life and pro-family policies would be given a fair chance and the scourge of the Liberal, anti-life dictatorship would be significantly weakened.

The trouble is that you can’t borrow your way out of debt, and you can’t restore justice and morality by bargaining with human lives and compromising on the central issues. To re-establish righteousness, one must promote it and defend it on principle. We have long said that we cannot—as a nation—continue to violate God’s laws and principles, tolerate the shedding of innocent blood, turn our eyes away from the plight of the pre-born . . . and then expect to receive God’s blessings. The promises and high-sounding rhetoric of the Poilievre Conservatives cannot restore Canada’s prosperity while we accept the sacrifice of 100,000 tiny Canadians every year on the altars of convenience and “choice.”

That’s why the Christian Heritage Party, its candidates and members continue to speak for the “protection of innocent human life from conception until natural death.” That’s why we—with thousands of other Canadians—will be participating once again in the National March for Life in Ottawa and in many other cities on Thursday, May the 8th. We encourage every one of you—if you are able—to come to Ottawa for this important annual pro-life event. If you can’t make it to Ottawa, you can show your support at one of the other local events.

The issue of human life is still the most important one our nation faces. We need to consistently, demonstrate our commitment for it at the polls and at events like the National March for Life. The CHP will be there, and we look forward to seeing you there too. God bless you!
