Death with Indignities

Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve seen several news items to which all decent human beings have reacted with horror. They may have seemed unrelated, but the brutal and callous disregard for human life and dignity brings them together as a macabre collage—the natural consequences of rejecting the supremacy of God and the rule of law.
The first story that caught our attention was the cruel and cowardly killing of a live baby by ISIS to demonstrate the use of explosives. In a training exercise, they booby-trapped a baby whose father they had recently executed. They then blew the baby up as they showed young recruits how to use improvised explosive devices. No doubt the exercise had a double motive: besides teaching bomb-making, it also served to desensitize the less experienced. Those participating in the training will be expected to carry out similar acts on innocent citizens where ISIS is attempting to impose sharia.
The second story got significant attention in the US when a video showed Planned Parenthood executives calmly discussing (over wine and dinner) the sale of body parts from aborted babies. Not only did this video show the small regard held by PP for human life and the ugly aspect of greed and profit motive in the abortion industry but also the willingness of PP to distort the facts, to mislead the public, and even to break the law. The worn-out and pathetic cries of “choice!”—so often claimed by PP as the motive for abortion-on-demand—now ring hollow and empty. Even many so-called “choicers” have had their eyes opened at least for a moment and the world now scrambles to make sense of a government-sanctioned organization killing babies for profit.
The third story, which received far less coverage by the media, was the revelation that in China—famous for its “one child policy” and forced abortions—wealthy and well-connected patrons are actually eating babies in back-room restaurants where the boiled flesh of unborn infants is served as “Spare Rib Soup.” For most of us in the West, even those who promote abortion “at any stage for any reason,” this is almost unbelievable. But once the barriers that protect human life are gone, why does it surprise us to see humanity descending further down the dark stairway to morbid anarchy?
Absolute truth is the only safeguard against rampant lawlessness. Unless we can agree that some things are always wrong, we will never be able to separate right from wrong or truth from falsehood. When human feelings and failings replace God’s clear commands, then those feelings are replaced by other feelings, the law of the jungle becomes the law of the land, and history’s most brutal and repressive dictators will return to haunt our courts, our prisons, and our streets. We cannot hope to maintain either civilization or democracy when we authorize doctors to violate the rules by which both civilization and democracy came to exist.
Human life is precious. Human life is sacred. Human life reflects the life of God, containing within it His stamp of creativity, beauty, and order. Because each of us has been given a heart with the capacity to love, a conscience with the capacity to recognize the bounds of decency and a will with the capacity to choose good or evil, we must use the mind he has also given us to connect the dots, to see that the rejection of God’s absolutes will only usher in another set of absolutes, ones which none of us will appreciate. There is no such thing as a moral vacuum or a truth vacuum. If we will not have God’s Word as our societal foundation, if we will not allow Him to rule over us, then we will surely be ruled by others who will impose on us their brutal and heartless demands.
We have today laws against “committing an indignity to a human body.” This is generally understood to mean a dead human body. How much worse when the indignity is committed against a live human being? By ignoring the desecration of life and culture, we become guilty of committing indignities against the next generation. By lowering our view of man to “just another animal” and lowering our view of God to “just another belief system,” we subject the coming generations to a violent, self-serving anarchy and we deny them the protection of a just and loving God.
