Are You Smarter Than An Eighth Grader?
April 19, 2011 | Author: Vicki Gunn |
In March, I was given an opportunity to speak to a grade eight class. There were some very intelligent young people in that class.
In order to demonstrate our national debt, I had 11 young people lined across the front of the class. The first three represented parents, grandparents, and great grandparents – our generations – the next eight students represented today’s young people, their children, grandchildren, up to their great, great, great, great, great, grandchildren.
The students representing the governments of the last three generations had mortgaged the following eight generations – none of whom would see the end of our debt at the rate budgeted by the Conservative government in 2008. We have, of course, gone further into debt and expect to continue increasing our national debt until 2015.
We have stolen the future of many generations to ensure that we can rely on government to provide program after program like a parent doling out goodies.
The programs offered by successive governments are not free. They are paid for by the Canadian taxpayers – the very ones struggling to make ends meet because of excessive taxation.
But there’s more. We have lost through abortion over 3 million Canadians. This has affected the number of people working to pay back the debt.
This is the reality that we have created for future generations and that successive governments continue to create. In order to buy our votes, the parties in Parliament are offering to spend more money and bury further generations in debt so that they can get their seats in Parliament.
This is immoral. We have stolen the future of the generations that follow us knowing that somebody must repay it.
CHP Canada believes that ‘somebody’ is us! It’s up to today’s Canadians to repay the federal debt. We would trim unnecessary programs and commit to repaying our national debt in the same way that a homeowner repays their mortgage. We currently spend $3 billion each month in interest on our debt. We commit to paying $4 billion on the debt each month. That’s just one extra billion...there’s more than enough, judging by the campaign promises that I’ve been hearing from the other parties. In about 35 years, we will have given our children an additional $2,100 per person in tax savings.
It is important to note that the Canadian Taxpayers Federation and the Fraser Institute both suggest the government "create a timetable for debt reduction." CHP Canada has heard that suggestion and created a timetable to protect future generations of Canadians.
That is better for Canadian families. That’s better for you and that’s better for the future.Other Commentary by Vicki Gunn:
