Please, Mr. Carney, May I Have My Allowance?

Vicki GunnHave you checked in on some of the discussions held in Parliament since it resumed a couple of weeks ago?

There is an affordability crisis in Canada. I’m sure that we all knew that. If you put gas in your car or food on the table, you know what they’re talking about. I watched some of the passionate discussion in the Q&A, in Parliament, on September 23.

According to MP Melissa Lantsman (Thornhill, ON), one in four employed Canadians is living paycheque to paycheque. She also advised Parliament that over one half of Canadians spend their entire paycheque or spend even more than their net paycheque…every month…no savings and increased debt.

The Liberal Minister of Finance countered these statistics with a litany of programs that they offer so they can dole taxpayer money out to us and have us fawning over them in eternal gratitude for their largesse. Really? Most Canadians work hard to put food on the table for their families, and they are proud of the fact that they have been self-sufficient in providing.

But the Liberal government tells us that we are not capable of providing for our families so, out of the goodness of the federal MPs’ hearts, Canadians are the recipients of a myriad of government programs. Using whose dollars? Taxpayer dollars…collected from the very people that the government plans to spend it on.

According to Minister of Finance François-Philippe Champagne, the Canada Grocery and Essential Benefits Program helps 12 million families. (According to Stats Can in 2025, there are only eleven million Canadian families but, whatever….) Perhaps if the government would quit paupering Canadians by borrowing to finance programs we can’t afford, Canadians would not need the Canada Grocery and Essential Benefits Program. Canadians would be able to provide for their families from the work of their own hands. This allows us to maintain a sense of pride in providing for ourselves and our families.

I could keep rhyming off statistics on how many taxpayer dollars are being spent to prop up Canadian families struggling in this inflationary spin cycle, but stats get boring pretty quickly. So let’s look at the realities.

How many of us would proudly go out and proclaim that “Daddy Carney (Big Gov.) is providing for my family”? We’d much rather prefer to say that, “I am—with my own two hands—providing for my family.” We all know that providing for my family is my responsibility, not the government’s.

According to the National Payroll Institute, approximately 44% of working Canadians are stressed about their finances. Canada is not in a good spot economically!

Our Criminal Code of Canada tells us:

215 (1) Every one is under a legal duty,

(a) as a parent, foster parent, guardian or head of a family, to provide necessaries of life for a child under the age of sixteen years.

It is the responsibility of parents to provide for their families. It is the pride of parents to provide for their families. We are accountable before God and each other for carrying out our responsibilities.

However, the result of government after government burying us in debt to buy our votes with programs they think we need or want has left us in debt for many, many, many generations to come. Canadians are living paycheque to paycheque, and we are slowly sinking financially as our savings are eaten up, while we try to survive governments that have frivolously spent tax dollars as if they were an infinite resource.

Our children and grandchildren will work every day of their adult lives to pay off the debt that these past generations have incurred. That’s even if government in power then commits to repayment; that has not been a priority for any of the Parties currently represented in Parliament. Even worse, if they make no attempt to repay the debt, but rather continue to spend money they don’t have, Canada will certainly face financial failure. Then what?

A peek on the internet tells us what would happen: unemployment would rise. This would cause an immediate revenue crunch for our spendthrift government. They would need to cut social programs—healthcare, education, and social safety nets—to try to cover costs.

What would happen in a Canada without those programs we are so used to? What would happen should law and order break down? We’ve seen it play about before, even during natural disasters. Desperate people do desperate things—looting, theft and burglary, and violence. Evil runs rampant!

What needs to happen? How can we avoid that impending scenario?

We must tighten our belts and pay back the lavish borrowing of the past. We will need to reestablish strong spheres of responsibility—family, church and government. We must reestablish a strong vision for a united Canada with a return to the biblical values that once made her great. We must humble ourselves before almighty God and repent of the rebellion of the past many decades.

CHP Canada is able to lead through this process. It’s time to look to the future for the blessings we enjoyed in the past. Together, let’s restore Canada to the God-honouring country she once was when our founders named her the “Dominion of Canada.”

Let’s return to God’s promise for nations that serve Him faithfully: “He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.” Psalm 72:8
