Is It 1984 Yet?

One of the most challenging books I read as a young person was George Orwell’s 1984. It painted a bleak and horrifying picture of the future – a world where “Big Brother” (the state) controlled the “news,” the record of past events, and the minds of the people.
One of the many lines that I can’t forget came near the end of the book, after “Winston” (the hero) had been tortured to make him conform to the belief that “Big Brother” was good.
One of the hallmarks of living in a free society is…Freedom.
In April and May, CHP Canada is offering to our members donating $100, a book, The Great Canadian Oligarchy: Flaws in Our Freedoms by Read Myers. It can actually prove to be a little scary to read this book. It caused me to wonder, really wonder, about the state of Canada.
I poked my head up out of my “foxhole” and had a peek at the world around me, at the Canada that I thought I knew. What I saw shocked me. I suggest that you also take a look…a good, long look…at the Canada that we’ll leave to our children unless we make some very dramatic efforts. Unlike Big Brother, we can’t change the past but we can change the future.
I don’t want to ruin The Great Canadian Oligarchy for you but…it won’t come as a surprise to you that there are concerns around the ways that Judicial Activism is re-defining who we are as Canadians.
From abortion to spanking, the decisions of the Supreme Court of Canada (SCoC) are affecting so many of our daily activities…like some of the more recent SCoC decisions: knocking down prostitution laws, ordering our government to fund drug sites in Vancouver, and challenging whether parents have the right to spank their children.
Whether they speak for or against our personal view of what’s right, we are entitled to only those freedoms allowed to us by the SCoC. However, let me caution you, that’s only their opinion for today. Tomorrow, they may change their mind and that means that what was legal today is illegal tomorrow. Oooooh! It does get confusing trying to be a law-abiding citizen!
But they aren’t the only government agency affecting our day-to-day life. If you’re a parent, then you already know that showing your love for your children with biblical discipline is interpreted by others as child abuse. Those who disagree with how you raise your children may cast a very disapproving eye on you if they happen to see you lovingly spank your three-year-old who is tearing uncontrolled through the supermarket (even though the SCoC has not yet ruled against loving parental discipline...raising a question is enough).
The Ontario Children’s Aid Society (CAS) has been described (by some, not us) as “More Powerful than God.” They exercise unbelievable power over families in their own homes and the government likes it that way. After all, some of them seem to think your child is so unlovable that only somebody paid to do so could possibly provide “loving” care to your child. We won’t go into the statistics on abuse in the government controlled facilities that “protect our children” by taking them away from parents...from the parents who love them and want them to grow into responsible adults. Parents make mistakes, but so do bureaucrats. Whom do you suppose loves the children more? Who has a bigger investment and interest in the children?
These are just two areas in which well-meaning government agencies have infringed upon our God-given rights. There are many more.
Do you lower your voice when you speak about certain “social issues” in public? Do you do it to avoid offending someone or to avoid being hauled before a “Human Blights Commission?”
Do you change your clothes in the “ladies” change room at your local pool or do you endure the discomfort of travelling home in your damp clothes placed over your bathing suit to avoid the man, (I mean, woman with man parts), using the women’s’ change room?
In Canada’s readiness to forfeit freedom for government intrusion, we are giving up more and more of what made this country great. We are giving the government greater control over our daily lives. Perhaps as the years go by, Canadians will be able to say along with Winston, “But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother” (Orwell, George. 1984. Part 3, Chapter 6).
Or perhaps, it’s time for Canadians to rouse ourselves and reclaim our heritage.
Perhaps today is the day every one of us should assess how much we are doing to keep “Big Brother” at bay.
The Christian Heritage Party supports small government and BIG freedoms. We do not believe that government should try to control every facet of our lives. Unless there is a clear and obvious reason, the government should not be dictating to us in our own homes. To quote Pierre Elliott Trudeau, “There is no place for the government in the bedrooms of our nation,” or, for that matter, in the kitchens, the living rooms, or the bathrooms. People talk about “choice.” How about “choice” in light bulbs? How about “choice” in health care delivery? How about “informed choice” when it comes to GMOs? How about “choice” when it comes to freedom of speech on university campuses?
The Christian Heritage Party stands on moral values that do not change at the whim of unelected judges, elected Parliaments, or Social Gurus. These standards are firm and fixed and given by our Creator. He makes us aware of these in the “Owners Manual” that He provided (the Bible).
Peep out of your foxhole, have a good look around and then join the battle, join CHP Canada today. Membership is just the beginning. It’s time to take up an offensive position before we succumb to the inertia and, with Winston, say…. We “love Big Brother”.
