For most of us, it’s difficult to imagine a person loving death. We spend most of our lives trying to avoid it, even though we know that death marks the eventual end of almost every human life on earth. We who know the resurrection power of the Living Christ believe that our soul and spirit will live forever and that we will receive glorified bodies that will never die.

Our Lord came to give us that eternal life, the abundant life that comes from Jesus, who is the Way, the Truth and the Life.

But there are people who love death and have given themselves over to it. The Bible talks about a demonic entity—Babylon—“drunken with the blood of the saints.” There are spiritual forces that glory in bloodshed and that celebrate the shedding of innocent blood. Such are those whom we have seen rejoicing at the brutal violence and bloodshed, the torture and destruction that took place with the terrorist invasion of Israel by Hamas militants on October 7^th, 2023.

But the love of death is not limited to Hamas. In our own country, passionate proponents of abortion scream bloody murder—literally—if they think that someone might interfere with the killing of a baby. In Israel, bloodthirsty militants filmed themselves raping, murdering, stabbing. They went so far as to behead babies. Absolutely barbaric. In our country, we are much more civilized. We dismember babies in the womb behind closed doors, in sanitary settings. 100,000 every year.

Since 2016, the federal government, the provinces and the courts have collaborated with Canadian doctors, hospitals and nursing homes to kill over 40,000 Canadians by euthanasia (MAiD). Even now, parliamentarians are debating whether this killing should include the mentally ill. How far we have fallen! Of course, we support MP Ed Fast’s private member’s bill C-314 . . . but should we even have to debate the killing of the troubled, the vulnerable, the confused? Isn’t their right not to have their lives shortened something we should all agree on? The truth is that there are those for whom the choice of death is an obsession. They demand it. And our secular society has given in to that death wish. And so we must continue to defend life at all stages.

And then there’s Halloween, that annual display of ghoulish, evil images and emotions. Death, fear and dark spiritual forces are highlighted and published with hideous graphic visuals. The commercial world has seized the opportunity to profit from this fascination with death and horror. While most children and their families are simply enjoying some fun dressing up—with lots of candy—the heavy emphasis on graves and goblins, witches and ghosts, blood and fear have made it a time of celebrating the evil that lurks about us all the time. On Halloween night, vandalism is tolerated as ‘good fun.’ And secular society accepts this all as normal. But when we see folks around the world celebrating the shedding of innocent blood in Israel, we are shocked. And rightly so. But can we connect the dots to see that in our own country, we are tolerating the shedding of innocent blood and the glorification of evil? All those who hate God—and the wisdom of God and the purity of God and the people of God—love death.

Our job is to proclaim the love of God and the truth of His Word to our generation and to turn them from death to life. The devastating loss of life in Israel is a stark reminder of the spiritual battle we are in.
