Liberal Immigration Policies Are Destroying Canada

There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death. Proverbs 16:25
Canada is known as a country that welcomes immigrants and refugees from around the world. We see ourselves—and are seen by others—as a nation motivated by compassion. And rightly so. But when unscrupulous politicians abuse the compassionate heart of Canadians to accomplish their political objectives, they put both our national economy and our Christian heritage at risk. The “open border” policies of the Trudeau Liberals since 2015—along with their other destructive and foolish policies—are damaging the economy and destroying the moral foundations of Canada’s institutions of justice and democracy.
In analyzing Canada’s current immigration policies and proposing improvements, we need to lay down some principles and objectives:
- Our first priority—in any policy—MUST be for the safety and best interests of Canadians . . . ALL Canadians.
- We won’t be able to help others if we allow our economy and/or our culture to be destroyed.
Canada is a nation of immigrants. Our unique culture has been the result of gradual immigration over time and the blending of many ethnic backgrounds with the Judaeo-Christian world view of our founders. However, the current level of immigration and other foreign migration into Canada is unsustainable. It’s contributing to inflation, the housing crisis, our healthcare crisis and our soaring debt. It MUST be curtailed if we are to restore our economy and preserve the freedoms and opportunities that have been a magnet for those seeking a better life for them and their families.
The Liberal government claims that we need to bring in 500,000 immigrants a year to keep our economy going, but is that true? And at what cost?
In 2023 (so far), Canada has taken in over 1,500,000 foreign nationals (1 ½ million+), some on a permanent, some on a “temporary” basis. This includes:
- 340,000 Economic and Family Class immigrants
- 683,034 International Students
- 450,000 Temporary and International Mobility Workers
- 48,788 Illegal Border Crossers
Total cost of immigration and refugees is over $34 billion per year. That’s over $95 million every day.
This number of foreign nationals is far beyond our capacity to absorb, assimilate, house and monitor. Canada’s current housing crisis—availability and affordability—is being further fuelled by the necessity of housing an additional 1.5 million foreign nationals every year. In 2022, there were 220,000 new housing units constructed in Canada. Simple math will tell you that’s not enough to house 1 ½ million additional residents. The housing market operates on supply and demand; our housing market today is like a nightmare of musical chairs, contributing to homelessness and hopelessness.
And then there’s the open border. About 50,000 illegal migrants are entering Canada every year. Instead of turning them back at the border, Canada is providing food and shelter at a cost estimated at $769 million in 2023. The majority of those being taken in would not qualify as legitimate refugees under the Canada-U.S. Safe Third Country Agreement. Inadequate vetting results in refugee claimants not even being required to prove their country of origin.
The large number of international students attending Canada’s colleges and universities (almost 700,000 in 2023) should also be ringing alarm bells. Universities may be depending on high tuition from foreign students to cover the cost of their bloated administrations and their woke faculties and curricula, but perhaps they should be forced to provide more useful and less “progressive” courses. And—of course—these campuses have recently been the venues for antisemitic and pro-Hamas demonstrations.
The government claims we need 500,000 legal immigrants per year to fill job vacancies. They thought nothing about the needs of small businesses when they locked down the country and paid workers to sit at home during the lockdowns. And now they care? Some businesses today receive wage subsidies to offset employment costs and some of those subsidies go to foreign workers. Another blow to taxpayers and our long-term economy. If we hadn’t been killing 100,000 pre-born Canadians every year for the past 40 years, there would be an additional 4 million Canadians right now working in our economy—doctors, nurses, home builders and problem-solvers. We can’t make up for our self-inflicted losses through immigration.
The CHP recommends:
- A drastic reduction in immigration targets: no more than 100,000 per year, at least until our housing crisis is resolved.
- Those accepted as immigrants MUST be selected based on the skills they can contribute. Doctors, nurses, engineers, construction workers, etc. Entry-level jobs should be filled by Canadians, not foreign workers.
- Illegal border-crossers and illegitimate refugee claimants MUST be immediately turned back at the border or returned to their country of origin.
- Every person who applies for immigrant status, a work permit, a student visa or refugee status MUST affirm a commitment to respecting Canada’s Judaeo-Christian heritage and the rule of law.
- Any foreign national who abuses Canada’s freedom of expression by calling for violence against an ethnic group MUST be deported to the country of origin.
Canada is founded on principles that recognize the supremacy of God and the rule of law. Our freedoms and prosperity are the direct result of our Judaeo-Christian values and the blessing of God. If we allow our culture to be compromised or undermined, we will lose those freedoms and prosperity and will have nothing to offer immigrants. That’s already happening, and we need to end that cultural collapse NOW. It is no kindness to foreigners nor to our fellow-citizens if we fail to protect our cultural heritage.
