Haters of Wisdom, Lovers of Death

There is much talk about hate in these days and as the death toll rises in cities and malls around the world, in our schools and in our streets, it is evident that hatred—deep, burning, cruel and bloodthirsty hatred—has gripped the hearts of many.
Despite the commentary on national television and the hand-wringing of the talking heads, community leaders, and heads of state, the descent into moral and spiritual chaos seems to be accelerating rather than abating. All the finger-pointing and sombre reflections seem to have no power to impede the carnage of self-infatuated individuals who are willing to perish in a hail of bullets for the satisfaction of causing others anguish and making mothers cry.
We naturally ask ourselves: What is at the root of the violence and destructive behaviour? Is there any way to put an end to the mayhem?
In the book of Proverbs, chapter 8, God gives wisdom a persona and allows her to speak to “the sons of men,” to humankind. The whole passage is a beautiful entreaty, laying out the benefits of seeking wisdom. The last verse (Pr. 8:36) gives a warning for those who choose to reject wisdom. It says “He who sins against me wrongs his own soul; all those who hate me love death.”
Who would love death? Death is something most of us try to avoid. Yet God makes it clear that there are some who are attracted by death or at least who—by their actions—invite death. What does it mean to “hate wisdom?” It means to reject wise counsel, to choose to ignore sage advice, to do one’s own thing in spite of warnings.
Human nature does not naturally want correction. Human nature does not rejoice in limitations. We generally don’t like speed limits, stop signs, restrictions, rules and regulations, or any other limitations that might hinder or prevent us in any way from doing exactly what we want, when we want, and how we want. In addition, we don’t want any negative consequences for the things we choose to do.
God, the maker of heaven and earth, the author of life, has given each of us a free will so that we can choose our behaviours. For our good and the good of society, He has also ruled that there are consequences to bad choices. He wants us to make good choices and—to protect us—He has placed barriers and warnings along the path. His instructions are designed to give us a good understanding of the choices which will lead to long-term happiness. Not all members of the human family appreciate these warnings. Some will drink and drive. Some will smoke in spite of warnings on cigarette packages. Some will ignore warnings about drug use, casual sex, workplace hazards, illegal business practices, etc.
The bloodshed we are witnessing around the world is the natural result of people hating and rejecting wisdom. Some have rejected God’s claim to the protection of innocent pre-born human life. Even the tired battle-cry of “choice” reflects the desire of people to engage in uncommitted sexual activity without having to deal with the natural consequences . . . in this case, pregnancy. That “choice” has led to the death of over 3.5 million tiny Canadians over the past 40 years. Those who hate wisdom love death.
Others want to ignore God’s clearly-articulated plan for the lifelong commitment of marriage between one man and one woman. They want to redefine marriage to include members of the same sex and some want multiple partners. Research proves that same-sex activity and multiple-partner sexual activity lead to higher rates of disease and higher rates of suicide. These consequences serve as a warning which reinforces God’s prohibition against sexual aberration. Staunch promoters of sexual experimentation don’t want God’s advice. They want to do what they want, when they want, how they want and without consequences. So our society continues to stumble down that road. We continue to allow our children to be indoctrinated in our schools. We continue to see our young people falling into lifestyles which will prematurely end some of their lives. Those who hate wisdom love death.
Our collective awareness today is focused on the mass shootings, bombings, and stabbings which have affected people in so many places around the world and which may at any time erupt on our shores. What does this have to do with “hating wisdom?” There are several connections: First, in our political correctness, we and our neighbours in the US have rejected God’s wisdom. We’ve taken His Word out of our schools. We’ve forbidden His name in many public settings. His wisdom instructs us to seek Him with all our hearts and not to trust in our own limited human understanding. But we—our nation, our politicians, our courts—have rejected His wisdom. We’ve chosen to go our own way. We’ve substituted polling numbers for His guidance and we’ve deprived our young people of His instruction. Whether it’s “lone-wolf” unhinged shooters or wannabe ISIS devotees, those who have rejected the sovereignty of Almighty God have chosen delusion and “God has given them over to a reprobate mind to do things which are not convenient.” Mass shootings are very inconvenient. Explosions at airports and in busy malls are senseless because they’ve been done by people who have rejected God’s wisdom. Those who hate wisdom love death.
What can we do? Is there any hope? Yes, of course. God calls us to greater obedience. He calls us to be salt and light in our communities and in our nation. The path ahead is not easy. The path ahead will require sacrifice. We must boldly proclaim the truth. We must call the nation back to God, back to His wisdom. He has answers. Those who love life will choose to love His wisdom. The Christian Heritage Party is not a church; however, we know that our nation needs to return to the wisdom and guidance of our Creator.
