Equal Under the Law?

Section 15 of the Constitution Act is a portion that blows up when a notable person faces charges…or doesn’t but, we think, should. During the #MeToo movement, we saw the abuse of power for sexual reasons highlighted. Recognizing that there were legitimate claims, which we hope were acted on by police, we also watched high level people brought down by charges in the court of public opinion but not sufficient evidence for legal action.

A Lament for Tumbler Ridge

Today, in Tumbler Ridge, BC, there are aching hearts…parents, friends and siblings of children whose lives were taken suddenly and unexpectedly by the actions of a mentally ill young man. How he lost his bearings and what might have been done differently are worthwhile questions, and we will touch on them.

EV Rebates Are Just Taxes in Disguise

Prime Minister Mark Carney has just announced a new government rebate for consumers purchasing electric (EV) and hybrid vehicles. The previous rebate program instituted by Justin Trudeau was cancelled because the government ran out of money allocated for that purpose.

Another Conservative Convention, Another Failed Attempt to Make the CPC Pro-Life

Over the past weekend, the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) held its convention in Calgary. Predictably, many of our pro-life friends in the CPC worked hard promoting this convention and pleading with pro-lifers across the country to come to Calgary and help pass pro-life policies that would guide the CPC if and when they actually achieve a majority in the House of Commons. Also predictably, the pro-life resolutions that came to the floor were rejected by a majority of the delegates.

The Carney-China Deal: Boon or Disaster?

Prime Minister Carney has been making quite the name for himself travelling around and signing partnership agreements with some very shady characters…most notably Communist China. His primary motivation seems to be to publicly snub US President Donald Trump and to build a new network of trading partners to replace our reliance on the US.

Get Back to Work! No Wait, Maybe Not…

What a conundrum to face as an employer! Imagine an employee so incompetent that it would be better for your business if he did less. Imagine that this employee undermined the work of other employees, prevented other employees from doing their work and even undid previous work done. Why Does the Canadian Federal Government Want to Destroy the Confederation Bargain?

The Federal Government is seeking—through a factum filed with the Supreme Court of Canada—to change a provision of our Constitution, namely Section 33, the notwithstanding clause. As the last living signatory to the Patriation Agreement, let me state clearly that, without this provision, there would be no Charter of Rights and Freedoms and no Constitution Act 1982.

Christmas Greetings From the Leader

As winter’s snows begin to accumulate (at least in most parts of Canada), our thoughts turn toward Christmas and traditional family gatherings, times of celebration, worship and reflection. As we remind ourselves and our fellow-citizens every year, these Christmas celebrations are not meaningless events thrown together out of boredom or philosophical speculations. Joining our hearts together in worship and remembrance of the birth of Jesus is a significant and meaningful part of our life and family experience—both as Christians and as Canadians.

Will Bill C-9 Enforce Inclusive Worship?

Bill C-9 is being touted as an ‘Anti-Hate Bill’, but is that really the goal? Bill C-9 proposes new Criminal Code offences, including one that would make it a crime to intentionally promote hatred in public against identifiable groups, using certain hate-or terrorism-related symbols.

Pipeline or Pipe Dream?

Much has been made of the recent announcement of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Prime Minister, Mark Carney and Alberta Premier, Danielle Smith, purporting to be the first step toward developing a new pipeline that will carry Alberta bitumen to foreign markets. The announcement came as something of a surprise, since oil pipelines have not been one of Mark Carney’s favourite topics. But let’s take a look at this MOU.
