Economic Conservatism Misses the Point

In his 1987 book, Liberating Planet Earth, Christian economist, Dr. Gary North, stated a stark warning to Christian voters. In essence he cautioned, “Don’t be misled by economic conservatism—it may look better than socialism or communism, but it’s not what Jesus was talking about!”
Let me quote from the author’s introduction to that book:
“Marxism is the most consistent and powerful religion of our time; it can only be successfully challenged by an even more consistent and more powerful Biblical religion.”
It must be recognized by Canadian voters that political parties that focus solely on economic issues are—no matter what they call themselves—fundamentally Marxist. The core essence of Marxism is the belief that mankind is an economic animal, and that the solution to all our problems is solely economic. Conservatism is, most assuredly, a better answer to our economic problems than Marxism—but as Hayek says in his seminal book, The Road to Serfdom, it’s impossible to preserve freedom under an economy that’s run by the state.
As President Ronald Reagan said, “Don’t look to government for the solution; government is the problem!” He also said, “The ten most terrifying words in the English language are, “I’m from the government, and I’m here to help you.” As Gary North wrote: “People can be transformed morally, and this alone enables them to overcome this world.”
Dr. North says his book is about two different types of theology, both of which claim to be about preaching liberation: one is Marxist, the other is Christian.
“We must be clear about this from the beginning,” says North. “Karl Marx was an atheist.” In fact, Marx’s favourite quotation was from Goethe’s drama Faust, in which the demon Mephistopheles says, “All that exists deserves to be destroyed!”
Politics is a worthy field of endeavour, because it offers a venue through which Bible-believers can provide a nation with moral leadership; but if all they offer is economic probity, yet they fail to provide moral leadership, how are they any better in the long run than the Marxists of the World Economic Forum?
Officially, Canada has 17 registered federal political parties; but in reality, there are only two; one asks, “Would you like to be governed according to biblical principles?” (CHP) and the other 16 all essentially subscribe to the Marxist world view that we are just economic animals.
For 35 years, the mainstream media have maligned and slandered the CHP, implying that our goal is to abuse the power of government in order to force Canadians to believe what we believe. But that has never been true. CHP’s commitment is only to place ourselves under the moral constraints of biblical ethics. If we are able to do that consistently, that will be good for every Canadian, regardless of their religious world view. And that includes those who consider themselves secular atheists.
For decades, we’ve endured the rule of political parties that placed themselves above such restraints. How has that been working for you? Trying to force Canadians to choose between sound economic policies or morally-sound social policies is a mug’s game. It’s impossible to create a sound economy while ignoring the biblical precepts that God intended for our benefit. He cannot bless a nation that violates His commandments.
If the moral climate of your community and your nation really matters to you, here are a few positive steps you can take:
- Pray. Seek the Lord’s guidance.
- Gather a few friends who share your moral and economic sentiments. A coffee gathering is a good beginning. Play some videos from our web site for them.
- Contact like-minded people from other churches. Play some videos for them. This may be the first time they’ve even heard of the CHP.
- If you do not already have a CHP Electoral District Association in your district, form one. If one already exists, find out how you can help.
- Help to recruit a CHP candidate for your riding (consider Christian politicians, such as council members or school trustees whose commitment to biblical values you already know).
- Contact CHP headquarters (1-888-VOTE CHP, nationaloffice@chp.ca) for assistance.
- Form a campaign committee and begin raising funds for a campaign.
- Recruit door-to-door canvassers to contact voters.
- Pray. Without Him, we can do nothing . . . but with God ALL things are possible!
