Why Is Our Canadian Flag Upside Down?

Recently, while watching protests, I’ve seen the Canadian flag flying upside down. What would possess a person to do such a thing?
According to our Government of Canada website, “The National Flag of Canada, whether it be a cloth, paper or made of some other fabric or material, should never: . . . Be flown upside down (except as a signal of distress in instances of extreme danger to life) . . . .”
That begs the question: What is happening that our flag is being flown upside down? What is being communicated at the “Freedom Rallies” where we so often see this?
We have watched federal and provincial governments pitting Canadian against Canadian, changing peaceful dialogue into “Us and Them” situations. Whether the issue is perceived racial discrimination, our societal approach to gender issues, beliefs about climate change, or the sanctity of human life, the divide between various factions has become deeper—and attitudes more hostile.
We saw it in Ontario when pro-life viewpoints could not be expressed in or around abortion clinics. Pro-lifer, Father Van Hee, was arrested and charged for holding signs challenging the government’s violation of his right to free speech. He was charged for violating Ontario’s “bubble zone” legislation, which prohibits free speech regarding abortion within 50 metres of an abortion clinic.
Perhaps we need look to the Canada Summer Jobs Program. Those who support abortion on demand (the “Us” group who align with Trudeau) are eligible to receive government funding to hire a student in the summer. “Them” (the outsiders who are pro-life), cannot receive government funds for summer students . . . a clear example of coerced thinking. If you want the good things, you will adopt the mandated beliefs. It’s also a clear example of a violation of our Charter Right to equal treatment.
In 1970, there was a social experiment where teacher, Jane Elliott, taught her third grade class about discrimination by treating blue eyed children and brown eyed children differently . . . offering different perks, different opportunities, and commenting on the higher intelligence of the “Us” group while denigrating the “Them” group. Each group was sucked into believing they were a victim or believing they were superior according to the colour of their eyes and the leader’s dictate. Their behaviour and their demeanour changed according to the treatment they received.
Why do I mention this? Our flag is being flown upside down to speak of our government picking the latest group of “Us vs Them,” otherwise known as the “vaxxed” and “unvaxxed.” The vaxxed can travel freely by plane, train, etc, in Canada; they can attend events; they can work. The unvaxxed cannot travel—they don’t have the ‘special papers.’ The unvaxxed cannot attend events in much of Canada; they don’t have the ‘special papers.’ The unvaxxed are being suspended without pay in many places—even the heroic front line healthcare workers of last year—are losing their jobs if they do not have the ‘special papers.”
The battle is heating up. How long before the vaxxed assert their position of superiority and the unvaxxed submit to coercion or begin to show signs of being of lesser value . . . lesser importance. . . victims.
Our Prime Minister has said that the unvaxxed have a choice. They can get vaxxed or live as second-class citizens. But, is that a choice? The Oxford Dictionary describes choice as “an act of selecting or making a decision when faced with two or more possibilities.” It defines select as “carefully chosen from a larger number as being the best or most valuable.” And, it defines coercion as “the practice of persuading someone to do something by using force or threats.”
These three definitions make it very clear that there is a difference between persuasion using “force or threats” and “carefully choosing the best option.”
The threat of no job to provide for self and family, travel restrictions and entertainment restrictions, are options best described as resulting from “force or threats.” On the other hand, examining all the data and deciding for yourself whether to take the experimental injections—without force or threats—would be “carefully choosing the best option.”
But there is far more at play here. If we look at the road from democracy to tyranny, we see that one of the early steps is to divide society into “Us and Them.” This division is seen when two people go to the theatre then everyone watches the unvaxxed person’s rejection. Or, when a Canadian is not allowed to travel or work to support their family. We all know that “He/She is not ‘vaxxed.’ ”
We have faced more than just a split into “Us and Them” over the past 2 years. One of the defences disallowed by the Nuremberg Trials was, “I was just obeying orders.” Today, we see police arresting Canadians for opening their businesses. Pastors are arrested for preaching the gospel. Canadians are arrested for not wearing a mask. People are not allowed to come together to mourn a loved one. Marriage promises, historically made before the witnesses of family and friends, are restricted to a very few people. All of these are frighteningly similar to what we would witness in a tyranny.
Canada adheres to the Nuremberg Principles. Number 4 reads: “The fact that a person acted pursuant to order of his Government or of a superior does not relieve him from responsibility under international law, provided a moral choice was in fact possible to him.” Our police officers face a moral dilemma. Receive the COVID vaccination or you will lose your job. Arrest the pastor or lose your job. The moral option available is to quit their job but then they also face loss of their God-given rights. It’s tough to stand up to coercion.
The next part to consider is the increasing acquiescence of Canadians, which is disturbing. The maxim, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing,” rings true. Today, we see too many Canadians willing to turn a blind eye to government coercion of our fellow citizens. We see too many moving to the next step on the road to tyranny where they are willing to do harm to those who believe differently: “. . . let them be without Employment Insurance! Let them starve! We had to take the needle—they should have to take it also.”
When we hear an elected Member of Parliament say that people who will not receive the COVID vaccine should be denied Employment Insurance (a fund they paid into without choice), we should be concerned. When we hear that some of our fellow Canadians support the denial of EI to the unvaxxed despite having paid into it for years, we know we have taken a step further down the road to tyranny.
Blind obedience to our leaders is creating a society that will forfeit rights and freedoms without regret. We must not accept that our leaders may deeply interfere in our businesses, our homes, our personal autonomy, as a right of their superiority. How long before Canadians will make a decision to stand up to the tyranny of an out-of-control government? How long will Canadians stand by and watch fellow countrymen face persecution for refusing to bow before tyranny?
Have we reached the point that our flag should be flown upside down? There are some Canadians who believe it is time to signal distress; to signal that there is extreme danger to life; some Canadians don’t care either way; and some are starting to become concerned.
CHP Canada will stand and defend your rights and freedoms. Join today and protect our democracy.
Note: The Christian Heritage Party does not endorse the practice of flying the flag upside down as a method of protest; I am merely highlighting the level of distress we feel for the current state of our nation. We love our flag and display it proudly. The sadness we feel is for the actions of those in government who are rejecting Canada’s heritage of freedom.
