New York Emulates Canada’s Open Season on the Pre-born
On January 22, New York state legislators passed a law allowing abortion throughout the full term of pregnancy, right up to the moment of birth. This shocking display of political correctness has disturbed multitudes of ordinary, common sense Americans and the attention it has gotten in the US has also generated additional comment in Canada.
However, the most shocking element of this expansion of abortion access in New York is that it makes the Empire State’s abortion law almost as bad as Canada’s. Whereas the New York law removes all restrictions only up until 24 weeks gestation, it leaves enough loopholes, such as a doctor’s “judgment” and the (undefined) “health of the mother”, that, in effect, there is no restriction on abortion right up to full term.
Canada, meanwhile, has NO laws whatsoever regarding abortion. We have no laws protecting the child from being wounded or killed by a violent, criminal attack against its mother. We have no laws protecting the child from being killed because it is female instead of male. We have no laws protecting a pregnant woman’s right to choose to carry her child to term without verbal harassment from the child’s father or other forms of coercion. We have no laws protecting pro-life taxpayers from having to fund abortions with which they strongly disagree. We have no laws protecting doctors and nurses from having to participate in the grisly business of abortion under threat of job loss.
In short, we have NO laws restricting abortion. Even New York, while basically following Canada’s moral failure to protect the pre-born, at least has retained the shadow of a law, dysfunctional as it may be.
The breakdown of morality and the searing of conscience go even farther when we consider the treatment of babies born alive as a result of abortion. Again, Canada leads the way downhill, if not in law, at least in practice. Recent Statscan statistics unearthed by Ottawa blogger Patricia Maloney indicate that between 2013 and 2018, there were 766 infants born alive after an abortion, most of whom were allowed to die without medical intervention; some may have been deliberately killed. That number would be even larger except that it excludes statistics from Quebec. This is in addition to the 491 infants “born alive and left to die” between 2000 and 2012, which Ms. Maloney also discovered through Statscan and CIHI (Canadian Institute of Health Information) reports. She reported that information in 2012 and some efforts were made to encourage a criminal investigation by the RCMP, since even under Canadian law, every “born” infant deserves medical care. However, the RCMP then, under Prime Minister Harper, ignored the breaking of Canada’s laws which had resulted in 491 deaths. There is no expectation that today’s RCMP, operating under a Liberal government is likely to act differently.
In February, the US Senate, voting along partisan lines, failed to pass the Born-Alive Survivors Protection Act. In Virginia, the state legislature nearly passed its opposite: a bill that would have allowed the deliberate killing of a newborn infant, pending a decision by the mother and her doctor. These actions—and failures to act—shine a penetrating light on the deteriorating moral fabric of North American society. Whether or not the US Congress or the Canadian Parliament is able to pass laws protecting human life, the broad social attitudes that allow morally-bankrupt politicians to be elected—those who show neither the will nor the courage to defend life—must be of concern to every citizen of conscience.
We encourage each of you to apply yourselves to the task of transforming society, whether by political action or by the patient persuasion of friends and neighbours. Our CHP candidates this fall will be offering Canadians a choice for Life! Family! and Freedom! We and our members must also take that message to anyone who will listen. We must not allow political correctness to win the public debate against a culture that recognizes the value of every human life. Pray and work! The kind of society our children will inherit depends in part on our willingness to speak up.
Join us at chp.ca and help us restore Canada’s culture of life! If you’re already a member, help us spread the word to your friends and family. We’re also looking for candidates who will bring the truth in Election 2019. Let us know how you plan to help!
