According to Statistics Canada, by 2031, because of increased longevity, there will be almost 1.2 million Canadians, aged 85 and over—almost five times the current figure. In 1930, there were 60 people working and paying taxes for every retired person. By 2030, because of our dwindling birth rate, there will be only two people working for every retired person. Will each person working be willing to give up half of his/her pay to support a senior citizen? Of course not! This begs an important question that all Canadians should be asking their MP: “Who gave the federal government the right to spend all of the contributions we made into our old age security fund?” Why didn’t our government invest those billions we contributed? It’s called theft; the government spent our contributions on campaign promises, pleasing people to buy their votes.
Canada’s broken Pension Plan must be fixed; our children deserve better. CHP Canada’s long term Better Solution is to overhaul this broken pension plan with our proven Personal Income Security Account which would give each Canadian an account in his/her own name, in which his/her payroll contributions would grow and accumulate, and would be available only to him/her upon unemployment or retirement.
Unfortunately Canada’s problems don’t stop there. This year, 2011, is the beginning of what has been called a “demographic time bomb” for Canada. This year, the first of the baby boomers enters retirement.
The runaway train, which is this demographic time bomb, is blasting towards us. How can we stop it?
Well, according to the C.D. Howe Institute, immigration cannot stop the train. Yet incredibly, Prime Minister Harper’s plan is to increase immigration beyond our current unmanageable levels. That, ladies and gentlemen, is the formula for a train ‘wreck’, one to happen shortly after the Prime Minister disembarks into retirement!
Compounding the retirement issue is our healthcare problem.
Wait times at emergency centres for tests and operations, which are already a serious problem, will force our government to act. We hope! But when and how will they act? We are already taxed beyond reason and our government must wake up to the fact that our current immigration practices cannot be the Canadian answer. In fact, immigration is and will continue to compound this problem and, if unchecked, will create many more problems, such as the effects of unchecked multiculturalism.
A number of CHP policies directly address this growing concern but number one on the list has to be that the family is recognized as the most important foundation of society. Public policy must reflect a recognition and protection of the important function of a family in providing and training up the next generation of stable and responsible citizens. That is where government must focus much more emphasis. The CHP Family Friendly Childcare Allowance is an excellent example of a building block to reinforce this key element in society. We would give $1000 per month to each family where one of the parents chose to stay home and raise their children.
Broken pension plan, dangerously low birth rate, flawed immigration system, our secular quest for securing rights over responsibilities and, since 1969, the loss of over 3.3 million citizens (consumers, workers, artists, students) through abortion, has given future generations of Canadians serious challenges to face. CHP Canada has championed a reversal of this trend by strengthening the family and advocating ‘Adoption over Abortion,’ and has proposed practical solutions to this tragedy. Studies conducted by the C.D. Howe Institute confirm that there are greater financial, economic and social benefits to be gained by shifting the priority in population management away from immigration and toward domestic growth.
