“I didn’t know I was pregnant!”

Communiqué Vol 17, No 42, Oct 26, 2010

Stuff happens. Not all of us notice. Things can sneak up on you or slip by. As a dear family member once said, “You never know what’s going to happen when you get up in the morning.” But really? Pregnant for 9 months and completely unaware? I have to admit, this stretches the boundaries of incredulity.

“The man”–as he is affectionately known by CBC–who became an instant hero for extricating a baby from a garbage bag in the dumpster outside his Calgary home, was surprised to learn that he was the father of the child he’d rescued. His girlfriend apparently failed to notice the common signs of pregnancy and when her unexpected baby was born she did the only logical thing any Canadian woman would do. She placed it in a garbage bag and threw it into the dumpster.

The whole incident bears a bizarre and faint resemblance to the story of Moses being pulled from the bulrushes by Pharaoh’s daughter, later–in a divine irony–to be nursed and nurtured by his own mother. Of course, Moses’ mother was fully aware that she had been pregnant and the tiny floating basket was a desperate (and successful) attempt to save his life, not to get rid of a “problem.” Despite the bizarre circumstances, we thank God that this modern rescue took place. Garbage bags and dumpsters just aren’t good places for babies (although thousands have gone out that way behind abortion mills across this country).

Whatever ultimately comes from this incident, one is tempted to draw parallels to other current events. Two years ago, in the lead-up to that ill-begotten election of 2008, Mr. Flaherty and Mr. Harper had “no idea” we would not have balanced books in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and so on. All their predictions were for “modest surpluses.” But a strange thing happened on the way to the polls. It turns out (and this should be noted by those planning a business career) that spending more than you make results in deficits, and deficits can grow up into really big debts. Who’d have known? And so today, after sinking another $80 billion into the hole in just two years, our finance minister and prime minister are projecting additional deficit spending until 2016. That should get us through two more elections and by then, who knows?

Similarly, when social planners began teaching teenagers and younger children “everything they had never even thought of asking about sex” they discovered–to their utter surprise–that this information prompted more sexual activity among youth, not less. More leaky condoms resulted in more disease, more pregnancies, and more abortions. Why didn’t somebody warn us? I don’t mean those narrow-minded Christians who were saying all along that would happen. I mean somebody with real credibility, like Oprah or Bill Clinton or… Svend Robinson?
Surely we’ve learned something in the years since then. The school of hard knocks is a tough place to learn but at least you really earn that diploma! We want safer streets, so instead of holding violent criminals accountable for their actions, we let lawyers and judges experiment on our communities by using the “revolving door” to let known offenders back out into the communities. That should work!?!

And after Russell Williams pled guilty to two counts of murder and a gazillion incidents of voyeurism and fetishism–neither of which are really illnesses, according to the psychiatric DSM-IV, they’re just “proclivities”–the judge gave him two concurrent “life” sentences, which means he could be back out in 25 years. Two consecutive sentences would have kept him off the streets for half a century. Maybe the judge couldn’t stand the idea of a 100-year-old guy in lingerie.

On the issue of free speech, we want all citizens to have freedom of expression, so we’ll only restrict the freedoms of those who hold a Biblical worldview. Why should they impose that on others? Meanwhile, those who taunt, threaten and intimidate from Islamic pulpits or from the offices of gay lobby groups or radical environmentalist organizations must be free to speak. After all, it is supposed to be a democracy, is it not?

One more thing: certain  the collapse of Canada Pension Plan and of our ability to provide health care to all, even a loss of respect for human life itself. They claim that ignoring the warning signs of history may cause us to repeat the mistakes of the past and then suffer the consequences. Why do they think that the troubles that caused earlier civilizations to collapse could have the same effect on us? Don’t they know we’ve found a cure for consequences? Anyway, if we just keep our eyes closed, maybe we’ll find out it was just a dream!  The alternative is nearly unthinkable. We might have to start doing things differently…
