The House of the Rising Sun

There is a house in New Orleans

They call the Rising Sun

And it’s been the ruin of many a poor boy…”

…and if Ontario Superior Court of Justice judge Ted Matlow continues with his latest rulings on this case the outcome will be the ruin of many more boys and girls.

A preliminary ruling on an upcoming prostitution case could very well make Canadian streets (and public schools) unsuitable for children even between gay pride parades.

An action was brought by former sex trade workers who are claiming that the current prostitution laws are not safe for most women. They are forced to work outside and in an environment of danger instead of from the safety of their own homes. Many believe that a ruling in favor of the prostitutes will also open the door to public advertizing and brothels.

The Globe and Mail reported July 7 that an Ontario judge has turned down a request from the Christian Legal Fellowship, REAL Women of Canada and Catholic Civil Rights League for intervenor status—all of which had argued that the court should hear a broad range of voices on a question with important moral dimensions.

“Mr. Justice Ted Matlow of the Ontario Superior Court said that the groups would be liable to turn the trial into a soapbox for spiritual views, which would be out of place in a strictly legal proceeding.”

Just how real the concerns of those wishing to intervene are, is highlighted in a recent article on WorldNet Daily by Dr Judith Reisman. Dr. Reisman is sought worldwide to speak, and to counsel professionals and governments regarding fraudulent sex science. In the article she highlights the degradation of morals where the sex trade has gone in the UK:

“Now a recent U.K. Daily Mail Online headline reads, ‘Schoolchildren given sex lessons … in what’s available at the local brothel.’

“The [Daily Mail] reports that school children as young as 14 heard a brothel owner describe his sex services, allegedly to protect the children against sex trafficking.(?) The Mail Online states that at least 15 schools played a ‘tape recording of a madam explaining the attributes of the girls she has on offer’…

“One mother reported her daughter was a tad ‘upset’ by her prostitution classes. Of course, instead of the U.K. banning over 50 brothels around Croydon, South London, children stuck in those communities are instructed in the actions inside.

“The brothel-encircled children heard a recording of a madam in Croydon listing not only the acts provided, but prices, ‘the vital measurements of prostitutes on offer and their ethnicity.’

“Ain’t modern English education great?”

One has to wonder at Justice Matlow and his notion that prostitution is a “strictly legal” issue. The burden born by women who suffer exploitation, abuse, and emotional distress is well known. It is a lifestyle that few choose, and most want to leave. To deny CLF, REAL Women, and the CCRL the opportunity to present in this Ontario case, is to deny the historicity of suffering, and the intervention of the Christian community in the helping women escape lives of prostitution.

The CHP rejects the notion that, because some citizens choose a degrading lifestyle, government or the courts have an obligation to enable or enoble it. The CHP has a better solution: protect children from predators; teach children to value their sexual purity and teach them the benefits of self-restraint and hard work so that they can qualify for a real job and enjoy a satisfying lifelong committed relationship in marriage. Children deserve the best we can offer them.
